Day 15

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share you love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Dear fandom,

You’ve brought me more than I could ever really enumerate here. I mean, it was because I went to Azkatraz, a Potter con in 2009, that I met many of the people who are now close friends in RL. A lot of those people no longer share a fandom with me, but it doesn’t matter.

When I was twenty-one, I slapped my sister in the face and my mum kicked me out )

Day 13

In your own space, write about a moment in fandom that meant a lot to you. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

A moment is very hard to choose! The Victory Ball at Diacon was full of gorgeous, shining moments: looking round at all these people having a blast, eating and dancing and laughing with my friends and knowing that we did it.

The better choice, though, might be Easter 2010. That’s when my grandmother died unexpectedly - well, as unexpectedly as any death that happens to someone in her late eighties. It was the Easter holidays and my flatmates had all gone home already. I hadn’t wanted to go home so quickly (issues with the family) but then she died. I was taking the train in a few days anyway and the train’s expensive at the last minute; it didn’t occur to me to ask for a lift.

So I spent a few days on my own, and what I mostly did was lie on the floor of my room with my laptop and read every fic from [livejournal.com profile] hp_getlucky as it was posted. The theme of “luck” meant that the fic was mostly happy - even the angstier stuff, like one where Draco gets addicted to Felix Felicis, would have a happy ending. It was exactly what I needed at the time, regularly posted & predictably happy fic. I don’t think I commented on any of it. It all seemed too fraught, and I couldn’t think of what to say. (I should try going back to it now, actually.) But despite the bit of guilt there, that makes it a more meaningful memory for me in a way. Usually I try to comment and participate and be part of the ecosystem that encourages fans to create and spend time here, and I think that’s important. But I didn’t do that this time and fandom was still there to give me exactly what I needed at the time I needed it - not in a personal way because people know me, but just because I was a reader who found it at the right moment. It felt like a gift.

I saw Cursed Child again last night ♥ ♥ ♥ It was still atmospheric and exciting and beautiful. One of the phrases I keep using to talk about Cursed Child is Epic Friendship, with those capitals. It’s a phenomenon I’ve seen before but I hadn’t thought of it in quite those terms before. So to define: Epic Friendship, to me, is when the relationship itself is a grand story, given great and likely central weight in the narrative in all its nuances, strong and affirming and wonderful. And also when the friendship is central to the fight against evil.

So think of Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Giles, and them joining themselves to fight as one at the end of S4. The Doctor bringing all his companions back to help him. Everything about Steven Universe, most obviously in gem fusion (although that also has a sexual & romantic subtext, of course).

this is where the post gets spoilery for Cursed Child and Sherlock s4 so far )

- The love meme is at ~1200 comments and still going strong. What the hell, guys. This is amazing.

- I’m not waving but drowning in a sea of LJ inbox and email notifications. But that is LOVELY. Do keep leaving comments and starting threads as you please.

- Being one of the top posts on LJ gets you random libertarians telling you off for your anti-2016 vitriol, apparently??? Super, super weird. Don't feel the need to go and tell him off though - I appreciate the defenders but a pile-on rather spoils the love meme mood. (I did deeply enjoy [livejournal.com profile] therealsnape's telling-off though. Terrifying schoolmarm thing of like, I'm not even going to say anything harsh and yet YOU WILL FEEL SO SMALL AND DISAPPOINTING.)

- Awwwwwww you guys, the thread for me is so lovely I can't even read it properly. I skimread and then I get embarrassed and have to go away. But it's so sweet. And I just love how much this has taken off, it says something really beautiful about fandom that people are so enthusiastic about leaving each other love.

- Speaking of love! ONLY THREE DAYS LEFT FOR LEAVING PROMPTS AT [livejournal.com profile] ron_draco_fest. I love Ron/Draco to PIECES and I'm really hoping for lots of juicy prompts to agonise over when I sign up :D Must leave some of my own, too!

Everyone seems to be feeling pretty bruised by 2016; I know I am. Fighting is important, but love is part of the revolution.

LOVE MEME TIME!

love meme banner by capitu.jpg

The way this works:

- Leave a comment with someone's username (and perhaps a bit of love for them) to start a thread. Then people can reply to that comment with more love for that person. Try scrolling through comments (or hitting CTRL+F to search for a specific username) to find more brilliant people to leave love for!

- This is being run on both LJ and DW. I will do my best to keep up an alphabetical list of the threads so far, so there's not too much duplication, but duplication across LJ and DW is fine.

- Anon is encouraged and preferred, but signed-in is fine too. If nothing else, signing in and out without an add-on bar is just deeply annoying :)

- Putting yourself up for a thread is ENCOURAGED.

- You don't have to say anything super complex or deep or meaningful. A ♥ is just as happy-making!

- try to check if you're replying to the post or a comment - there are some stray comments which is always sad!

- Have fun!

You can pimp using the banner by posting this:

Or a giant cat type banner:

SO. Who here remembers Diacon? Because some of the same people have got together and we’re gonna put on a Harry Potter reunion con in 2017.

This isn’t the Big Announcement, which is why there aren’t any beautiful graphics. (Beautiful graphics are afoot though. My god.) It’s just me telling my personal network, for a couple of reasons. I’m really excited, and I know some of you will be really excited, and also we’re recruiting for the con committee.

So this con is in the very early stages of planning. At the moment we’re looking to have it the first weekend of September 2017, e.g. Nineteen Years Later. (The Friday is the 1st.) It’s going to be southeast England - at the moment we’re thinking very close to the Harry Potter studios so we can have a really cool event there, but it may end up being in London itself or another nearby commuter town. It’s going to be sort of Harry Potter Plus -- something for those in HP fandom, but also a reunion event for people still in fandom who’ve moved on from Potter but still want to come back, visit their old fannish stomping grounds and see old friends again.

The big thing here is: we need an Access person. ASAP. In a perfect world it’d be someone who can be involved with accessibility right through planning and into the con (obviously helped by the rest of the committee and volunteers) but in the short term an Access person to help us with choosing the venue & working out what we need would be fab. Feel free to link this post to people if you think they might be interested :D

OMG, you guys, I keep meaning to post about Daily Deviant’s Banging Birthday fest. TEN YEARS of daily deviance, that is a MILLION YEARS in internet time and the fic is great. And today the fic for ME posted!

Draco’s Banging Birthday by Anon. Draco/Neville, Draco+Luna/Ginny, Draco/Harry, Draco/Pansy, Draco/Kingsley. ~1200 words; NC-17; Restraints, anal, voyeurism, vaginal fingering, cunnilingus, threesome, rimming, anal fingering, vaginal fisting, size kink, biting, hint of D/s. Summary: From the prompt: Draco is a very spoilt birthday boy and he wants EVERYTHING. No, EVERYONE.

Draco is delightfully spoilt and hedonistic here; he’s made a list and scheduled lots of different people over the course of his birthday. We get to see different dynamics and kinks with different characters; I especially enjoyed the vine bondage with Neville and the fact that he and Pansy were awkward virgins together and know each other so well.

There’s lots of variety and the last line made me laugh. I also love that he cancels on Blaise without a second thought so he can have sex with Harry again (so callous, hahahaha) and how he gets all overwhelmed and suddenly submissive with Kingsley. So much fun.

But there’s a LOT of great fic and art going up, you should totally check it out.

Weird experience I had this week, doing a lesson on fanfiction for my thirteen-year-old Italian students, who’re learning English as a foreign language:

STUDENT: I don’t read fanfiction, I like books.
LOKIFAN: What’re you reading at the moment?
STUDENT: Shadowhunters by Cassandra Claire.

Planning my lesson on fanfic for my four weekly lessons with thirteen-year-olds. I'm making them a quick article, then we're going to talk about it (and that it's being studied at unis, although more in a cultural studies way than lit-crit). I know a bunch of them read it :)

EXCITING. Feel free to suggest something you think I should specifically talk about!

when you discover something in drafts from like a month ago but whatever

SQUEE, [profile] this_bloody_cat recced Unforgivable over at [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom! Unforgivable’s probably my favourite of my own fics and I love a [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom rec most of all.

(Quick re-cap: it’s dark, dub-con Ron/Draco set a few months after DH. Draco’s joined the rebuilding-Hogwarts team and he’s being all vulnerable and likeable and it’s working. Ron blows up about him being a murdering Death Eater, have we all forgotten that, and Draco comes to him afterwards and offers a deal: do anything you want to me for a night, but then you have to forgive me. Cue bitter, angry dom!Ron and humiliated, anxious, making-himself-keep-going Draco kinking it up and failing to deal with their war damage. Open ending.)

[profile] this_bloody_cat has this cool idea which I didn’t think of at all while writing it, but kind of love. So in my head Draco goes to Ron for forgiveness because Ron is the only one who is still actively remembering what Draco did, who’s stubbornly refusing to be softened by Draco’s charm offensive - and probably therefore sees Draco more the way Draco sees himself. Cat suggests:

It did make me wonder, when I first read it... why did Draco want Ron's forgiveness that much? Had he made deals like that before, to other students -- and if he had, perhaps they just requested something different, something safer, something not as humiliating?

WHICH IS FASCINATING. And also plays into why the other students were forgiving. Like, I think it works anyway; it was partly a comment on fandom dynamics, our willingness to forget a character’s past misdeeds if it’s a vulnerable charming dude - and I also think Draco is canonically charming, and that a small group of idealistic young people, who likely saw people they loved doing bad things, would be more-or-less willing to move past things, especially with Hermione and Harry’s strong personailities leading in that direction. But the idea of Draco quietly going round and offering this deal to people is awesome and totally fits.

Also HOT.

I wasn’t online on Friday, being at work, then the pub, then asleep. BUT THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE APPRECIATION ♥ I APPRECIATE READERS AND RECCERS AND OTHER WRITERS TOO. [livejournal.com profile] capitu and [livejournal.com profile] my_thestral, you made my day!

In other forms of catching-up, I did the trope meme (how could I not?) and [livejournal.com profile] notearchiver’s kink meme as well. The kink meme was 10000% harder.

For both of them I noticed the difficulty in navigating apathy versus hate, and more importantly - especially with the kink meme - ‘things I like but don’t love’ vs ‘things I like significantly less, or even usually dislike, but I always remember that one fic that made them awesome’. (Eg wax play vs CBT.) Plus, as the kink meme went on I found myself occasionally going for ‘what I like IRL’ vs what I like to read in fanfic!

AND there was stuff like - men crossdressing does nothing for me, unless it’s used for humiliation (and even then it needs to work in a specific way) or really works the characters’ being into it. Women crossdressing/wearing traditionally male stuff though, that melts my brain. I like smut with fat characters, especially art, but ‘fat admiration’ as a kink isn’t my thing, except loving descriptions of fat bodies kind of shades into that? IDK I AM EASILY CONFUSED.

It was strange giving hurt/comfort such a low score, but it's a narrative kink rather than a sexual one!

For all that, it came out really accurate I think. I managed to always choose one of the the two, even when it was between two massive squicks, which helped.

Anyway, here are my answers for the kink meme )

And the trope meme )

It's art, Harry and Draco in the moment before they kiss, and it's SO BEAUTIFUL YOU GUYS.

The MA's notes said they wanted to "capture a key moment between these boys, because it's something you don't see very often with all the UST between them." And you can really feel that, this moment when things between them change.

I love the colours - gorgeous fire behind them and the pale/green flowers and their House colours painted on them - and their expressions and closed eyes. Draco's hand in Harry's hair, angling him, and Harry's outstretched neck and Adam's apple - the vulnerability, the intensity between them, it's just gorgeous.

This Is Magic

Kinky fests

lokifan: Bare arse as a tawse hits (Tawse)
You guys, my Kinky Kristmas fic. It is GLORIOUS.

It's 2.5k of kinky Harry/Draco and you should check it out immediately: Hold You, Touch You, Feel You, Always by (as it turns out) [livejournal.com profile] unbroken_halo.

I asked for intentional ignoring/neglect with Draco pairings, because I thought that would be interesting given his love of attention. And I LOVE what Halo did with the prompts. This is kink within an established relationship, which I love to pieces (they have a routine, they trust each other completely, Draco suggests something new) and then something happens which is SO RARE in smut and so lovely: the kink, once they try it, turns out to not suit them at ALL and it’s a bit of a disaster.

And then they reconnect via hot sex :D

It’s amazing how clearly a whole relationship and dynamic comes across in such a short fic. And I really love Harry as an indulgent, sweet dom - he’s such a nice boy, I adore it - but also steely about having his way on certain things, eg making Draco come himself after having ignored Draco. (At his request, but still.) SERIOUSLY IT’S SO HOT AND LOVELY AND REAL GO AND CHECK IT OUT.

On the subject of kinky fests, there’s still time to claim a prompt (or your own) at [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest. I’ve claimed an own-prompt, and I’m keeping some of the prompts left there in reserve in hopes of having time. Now I’m going to self-indulgently show you the prompts I left in hopes of tempting one of you terribly talented lovelies :D I forgot how fast prompting closes, so they were SUPER LAST MINUTE and therefore probably even more id-tastic than usual.

check out the (occasionally non-consensual) kink under here )

Cecilia Tan, aka [livejournal.com profile] ravenna_c_tan, is giving away an ebook of The Siren and The Sword to anyone who donates $10 to the Organisation for Transformative Works between now and Friday 17th December at noon. (Her timezone, presumably, though the post doesn't specify. I think she's somewhere on the east coast of the US.) If you're one of the first five to donate $25, you can get a signed paperback or an audiobook download from Audible.

The Siren and The Sword is erotic romance, and fantasy, and 'new adult' - it's the first book in her Magic University series - so I think it'd suit a bunch of us really well. :) A lot of you, particularly those who share my taste for Harry/Draco or Snaco, will have read Cecilia's excellent fanfic.

Plus, of course the Organisation for Transformative Works is a great cause in itself. Those of you who've been around long enough to remember Strikethrough here on LJ might also remember the conversation after it: about how fans needed somewhere we couldn't be ToSed, needed an archive of our own. And now we have one, thanks to the OTW.

Donating $10 to the OTW also gets you a year's membership, which includes things like the ability to vote in OTW elections.

I also agree with Cecilia on this point:

I believe that as corporations realize there is money to be made and material to be exploited, the right of fans to create transformative works is one that will need to be defended even more zealously than it was when they were just calling us “pirates” and “molesters” for doing it.

Go! Donate! Get yourself a book!

So a couple of days ago I got this review on ff.net of my fic Respect Your Elders, that I’ve only just looked at. It consists of one line:

Lovely story, but I was under the impression that Shapinglight from LJ wrote it.

joomla visitor

...

It’s anonymous, meaning I can’t reply. There isn’t a mechanism, to my knowledge, for me to respond in the ‘reviews’ segment publically on that site.

Now I don’t mind the confusion. Respect Your Elders is Giles/Spike smut, and [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight’s written a bunch of great Giles/Spike fic, she’s who I associate with the pairing too. It’s easy to misremember this stuff and I’m not going to get precious about it.

But. The phrasing.

Maybe I’m being oversensitive but that really looks like someone semi-politely semi-accusing me of plagiarism. Particularly because it’s anonymous, but even before I noticed that I was like ‘wtf… this is like the warning-shot review before you start compiling links for stop_plagiarism.’ And there’s nowhere for me to respond, and perhaps link them to the damn LJ post.

I know it doesn’t come right out and say it, but I literally can’t read it any other way. Especially the phrasing - “lovely” story, and “from LJ”, I just. I HOPE RIGHT AFTER THIS THE “GUEST” DID SOME RESEARCH AND FELT ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.

Dear “Guest”,

i hope you fall into a pit of bad anime dubs

No love,

me.
