Love From England

lokifan: Hero shot of Suki from AtLA smiling (Suki: hero)
My heart has been hurting all day. Tomorrow is the London Women’s March, in solidarity with my American sisters (and everyone else). In the meantime here’s a sonnet for America, from England. Or possibly for all my American siblings in the struggle from me.

Love From England )

Roz Kaveney, poet & author & activist, wrote a sequence called The Poet To Her Young Comrades a few years ago. I was rereading them today (here's the original post) and beg her indulgence in reposting this angry one, because I think you might find it helpful too.

Nine Eleven

NB: in the UK, the ninth of November – the day we knew Trump had won – is written 9/11/16.

A cheap comparison to make, maybe;
No one died or jumped to escape the flames
They're live and whole in the... land of the free?
But it's a brave (bad) new world all the same.
(Live? I knew a woman who killed herself
Wednesday, before she could lose her healthcare.
Come January access to help and health
Would be considered more than her fair share.)
Americans say, how could it happen here?
Europeans say, we've seen this before.
And the Middle East holds its breath for fear
Of breathing the flames oxygen, of more.
Cheap comparison. But the date seems like kismet
Now we can only wait; the worst hasn't happened yet.

Enjoyable problems to have: between adding more threads, replying to threads, and trying to keep the list of threads remotely up to date, I am sort of drowning in love meme. YOU GUYS ROCK.

But! I am still attempting to catch up on the January talking meme, [livejournal.com profile] writcraft wanted me to talk about poetry and why it means so much.

Now, I think ultimately I’m a prose girl, but it’s true there are poems and lines of poetry that mean so fucking much to me, that can make me breathless. This reasoning I think is maybe very idiosyncratic? But to me, poetry means so much because )

Title: I’ll Be A Better Son
Word count: ~200
Characters/pairings: Harry/Draco, implied Draco/Astoria
Rating: 12
Summary: Draco enters Auror training at nineteen, to prove himself and his family to the world. 2000 begins with Draco part of a public new relationship.
Warnings: angst
Disclaimer: The boys belong to JKR, even though I’m often much nicer to them than she is.
Author’s Notes: This type of poem is a villanelle. It was written for [profile] poetic_hp’s current challenge, decade. Also, iambic pentameter continues to make me its bitch.

I greet you from a stone manor filled with plastic rats, floggers, chocolate cake and perverts. And adorable people.

There will be talk of this later. For now, I’m just going to talk about stuff going on in November.

I’m doing NaNoWriMo! I will be writing about fourteen-year-old boys and magic. Fourteen-year-old boys who do not get raped by werewolves. I doubt I’ll be talking about it much; I think it might/will get dull. Still, I’m making a NaNoWriMo filter. Comment to be added! Do you want to hear about progress and characters and stuff? Or are you doing it yourself? Maybe we can just whine at each other in comments. I’ve never done this before, so I don’t know how it’ll turn out.

SECOND. I will still be posting in November, every day. Because November is Britian’s National Poetry Month. So every day, I’m going to post a favourite poem of mine. And probably some squee underneath about how I LOVE IT OMG, which might be funny if I post some sober Thomas Hardy or something.

This is opt-in, not opt-out poetry. If you want to be on the filter (incidentally, I don’t know how to make the filters work, but I’m sure I’ll work it out) then comment! POETRY.

I had a great weekend with Miss Godfrey, despite wearing my new shoes to walk around cobbles for thirteen hours and learning painfully that I have gone up a shoe size. I don’t even know how, I AM NINETEEN I HAVE STOPPED GROWING.

Also, Dreamwidth codes! If you want ’em, I’ve got ’em, although I imagine most people who want a Dreamwidth account have one by now. I really must start posting over there.

Item three in this extremely lacking-in-proper-paragraphs post: I’m signing up for [profile] hp_darkfest! I had a really fun, creepy idea while on MSN with [personal profile] lavillanueva, and I want to write it. (Plus, [personal profile] melusinahp is lovely. Plus plus, I want to butter her up because I’m writing original fic involving a fetish club and I have no idea what I’m doing.) So YAY FOR DARKFEST! It has loads of amazing writers signing up, and I’m super excited. Even if I now have to search through the MOUNTAINS of archived discussion between Lindsay and I, looking for the plans for the fic.

I have found something in the search! Naturally, not what I was looking for: I wrote a sonnet about kink, ages ago. I don’t think I posted it – if I did, I failed at using the ‘poetry’ tag – so here is a sonnet titled HURRAH FOR FETISHES.

It’s a terrible title, but I like using ‘hurrah’ because it shows up in old school stories and/or Enid Blyton.

EXAMS ARE OVER! GLEE!

The Concepts in Literary Study exam was the worst I’ve ever taken bar none, but at least it’s over. And I went with the Lesbifriends (I know, we have a pun problem) to the Creative Writing Society Open Mic Night (catchy name) last night. It was awesome. Especially since my friend Violet read some of her poetry and did it brilliantly. They were so funny and effective; I’m still thinking about them now. She’s putting together a collection and it will be brilliant, if the poems we heard are any indication.

*grins* I love writer friends. She’s gonna be published soon, I’m sure. Although the poems are more effective read out – maybe she’s the next Taylor Mali? Only, you know, a girl.

Speaking of poetry... it’s Limerick Day! (Thank goodness, because unlike Violet I can't do freeverse.) So here we go.

The American public’s been getting hateful,
Over maggots and rat hairs – a plateful!
But the FDA’s tricky,
They say it’s just icky,
So suck up your flies and be grateful!

*smirks* Sorry, guys. I just read an article about all the stuff that can go into food before it’s considered contaminated in the US. To make up for this, have something porny.

Title: You Harlot
Word count: 28
Characters/pairings: Harry/Draco
Rating NC-17. It’s a limerick, that’s what it’s for.
Warnings: Spanking, making light of prostitution?

Author’s Notes: Written for [profile] poetic_hp’s current challenge, luck.

Being ill at really inappropriate times. And sleeping a lot, when you're used to being able to stay up late with very little in the way of ill effects.

/whine

Er... I should say something else so this isn't just the Grumpy Ill Post that I'll cringe at in a few days. Have a limerick.

There was a woman, name of Narcissa,
Her husband did love to kiss 'er,
The Aurors didn't aim to please,
So she kicked 'em between the knees,
They cried, and all the hexes missed 'er!

...I'm tired.

Word count: ~100
Characters/pairings: Harry/Draco
Rating PG
Summary: A sonnet for the real Harry Potter.
Warnings: D/s suggestion
Disclaimer: The boys belong to JKR, even though I’m often much nicer to them than she is.
Author’s Notes: Written for [profile] poetic_hp’s current prompt, love. Naturally I wrote a sonnet for the prompt, even if the iambic pentameter fell at the final couplet. My thanks and apologies to William Shakespeare and his Sonnet CXXX

First off, guys: the awesome writer Amanda Marrone is giving away books! There are five copies to win, and you get an extra name-in-the-hat if you write a supernatural poem, as well as a shot at a witch ball. I wrote one, and even though I wrote it in sixty seconds I rather like it.

I blame [personal profile] lavillanueva for this one! We were talking about how awesome semi-colons are (yes, we're nerds. This is the internet) and to show my love, I've written a sonnet to my favourite punctuation mark. In iambic pentameter.

Live Long and Marry

I just put up two offers: to write fanfic or original fic of 5000 words, and to write four sonnets. I'm pretty nervous, and I feel a little ridiculous to be acting like people would pay money for one of my stories! But I also feel much better - this is such a good cause, and I was starting to feel so guilty that I wasn't one of the many, many fandomers who've offered to help! I'm lucky enough to be able to marry a woman if I choose to, and I want to share the luck around!

Seriously, guys. I'm assuming and hoping you've all seen this already, but go and look again! There's the most amazing stuff on offer.

Right, I'm going to go and have a nervous breakdown at the idea that I've just posted to say '£££ or I won't write for you'. Yes, I know it's for charity. That doesn't make me feel much less anxious.
