What an awesome story! I'm googling around about the plans for the observatory site now, and look what I found on Wikipedia: "The Arecibo Observatory was featured in the James Bond movie GoldenEye and an episode of the X-Files, S02E01, 'Little Green Men.'" Not sure if you were ever an X-Files fan, but I find that fact super interesting.
