Merlin 313: The Coming of Arthur Part II
YES! I FINISHED IT IN TIME! VICTORY!
YAY! I still don’t get why the librarian/court historian crowned Morgana, aside from the avowed secularism of Merlin, so I’ve decided to take it as showing the sacred nature of knowledge.
OMG SUPER EVIL MORGANA. NO KILLING CIVILIANS!
*sighs* This is so completely stupid and inconsistent with Morgana’s characterisation. The reason she turned against Uther originally and almost killed him, the reason for all her fights with him throughout the first two seasons, was that he was a tyrant who mistreated the people and she hated that. I can see her killing the knights who wouldn’t swear loyalty - extreme, but she gets rid of threats to her ambitions pretty damn fast. Hurting civilians just... I CANNOT FANWANK IT INTO MAKING SENSE.
Also, she is in no way stupid enough to leave Uther alive. Sadism has never overriden ambition and caution with her before.
Poor broken Arthur.
The thing about Gwen and Leon growing up together is a stupid retcon, sorry.
There is not enough sadface in the world for what’s happening between Gwen and Morgana.
But Morgause is a WORTHY SUCCESSOR to Morgana in *appearing* and doing an Evil Smirk.
FUCK OFF FREYA, YOU AND YOUR EPISODE WERE ANNOYING.
Gwen, blacksmith’s daughter, forging a key! Love it.
It’s interesting seeing Merlin’s role as wise counsellor to Arthur take shape when they’re both the same age. One of the cooler aspects of this particular retelling.
OH FUCK IT. Enjoying the glow of Merlin being a BAMF and then bloody Lancelot shows up.
EEE PERCIVAL. PERCIVAL THE FOOL. The one who helped the Fisher King! Nice to see you, despite your major Thing being nicked by Merlin. This whole episode’s getting Round Table-tastic.
SPEAKING OF WHICH. Yay, Round Table! With Merlin at Arthur’s right hand, and Gwen at his left. *glee*
ARGH. It makes perfect sense considering Lancelot’s mythological position as the most noble knight but ARGH WHY IS HE FIRST TO SWEAR ALLEGIANCE. AND DRIBBLE ON ABOUT HONOUR. SHUT UP LANCELOT.
Gwaine’s one was awesome, Elian is charming, and YAY GAIUS AND GWEN.
Merlin’s method of swearing allegiance was v charming and perfect for them. SO DESTINED.
OMG THE KNIGHTING SCENE. I am getting very emotional. I think everyone’s very well delineated, and you could see that in the scene: Lancelot uncomplicatedly happy, Gwaine obviously conflicted, Gwen smiling to see Elian finding a place in the world. Merlin totally welling up. ♥
Oh Gaius, listening in on Merlin and Lancelot’s sweet nothings. So sneaky. ♥
YES, LOOK EMO, LANCELOT. YOU MIGHT BE THE ONE TOO HAVE A FAMOUSLY PASSIONATE AFFAIR WITH HER BUT GWEN’S MARRYING ARTHUR.
MERLIN AND GAIUS. SO SWEET.
FIGHT SCENE! LIEK WHOA.
EEE GAIUS! FUCK YEAH. MY FAVOURITE FOREVER.
OMG Morgana. I love that when she yelled “no!” it wasn’t for the loss of her army, but the loss of her sister. Also, WHOA EMOTIONAL POWER. SHE’S GETTING ALL DARK WILLOW UP IN HERE.
...what? SERIOUSLY? WHAT HAPPENED WITH MORGANA?!
Okay, fine, Arthur and Merlin hanging out, that’s nice.
FUCK YEAH GWEN RIDING AT THE HEAD OF ARTHUR’S KNIGHTS. SHE’S LIKE MOTHERFUCKIN’ CORDELIA UP IN HERE.
Except not, because Uther’s rather Lear-ish and I think Arthurian canon’s already got all the siblingcest it can take.
Aww, public kissage! Also, Merlin’s wistful expression, as a consolation prize for the slashers.
YES! YES! I WAS SO HOPING IT WOULD HAPPEN AND IT DID! MERLIN PUT THE SWORD IN THE STONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MORE EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And now, time for Merlin 4.01!

But WHY KILL MORGANA'S CHARACTERISATION, PEOPLE????
Also, we seem to disagree on teh love interests… I liked Freya's ep, mostly because Colin completely sold the story to me. That felt like the sweetest first puppy-love that never can be and hurts so much anyway. Worked way better for me than Arthur and Gwen - I think this is a chemistry thing for me.
But round table! Percival! Knightings!!! Merlin and Arthur!!!!!

I mourn so much. :( She specifically yelled at Uther for this kind of crap, over and over. It MAKES NO SENSE.
Freya herself annoyed me a bit, but I mostly am just not a fan of how quickly Merlin was like LET US LEAVE CAMELOT. My reaction to that was a big WTF. (Arthur's similar promise strikes me as less WTF: he's known Gwen for so much longer and would take Merlin with him ;)
Arthur and Gwen works really well for me for brief moments. I sort of work to like it, because I love both of them, and I think they're sweet together. I can see being annoyed at having it pushed so hard at certain times, but I actually find the episodes that focus on their relationship (Once and Future Queen, Queen of Hearts) cute and convincing, generally. It's the other episodes, where they SIGH A WORLD OF SIGHS and don't interact, so there's no build-up of the relationship, that make me go WAIT WTF when it's meant to be Twu Luv.
ALL THESE THINGS!!!!!

*nods* I can see that. But I really don't see it as different from Arthur and Gwen - other than Colin selling it better to me. (As much as I love Bradley, he and Angel really don't have that kind of chemistry.) I also don't think Arthur had plans for bringing Merlin with him…
I think what bugs me is that I see those moments as being the powers force-feeding us TWU WUV OMG!!!11! and expecting us to buy it at face value. The first time I saw The Once and Future Queen I thought it was cute, but the whole thing soured quickly. I usually try hard to not be meta about those things, but here it really does bug me *sigh*

Yeah, definitely. :( I think TOAFQ is totally adorable but it's SO NOT establishing Twu Luv. Like, it took ages to sink in that actually there was going to be no more showing, only telling.

I like the thought that he'd have brought Merlin <3 Makes me feel better about it ;-)
So agree with that!!!

So agree with that!!!
It makes me sad! Cos I try not to get too meta, like you, but it ends up making what would have been one of my favourite episodes (the farmer-to-knight sequence! Gwen calling Arthur on his crap! Arthur vs chicken! Really cute first kiss!) into the set-up for ANNOYANCE.
