Looks like we both got what we need
So one of my numero uno favourite tropes is -- well. It’s hard to define. Not exactly exes who become friends; that’s nice but doesn’t turn my narrative crank. It’s people who loved each other once, and who honour that even though they’re not the same people any more and the relationship is so different. Enemies who are ex-best friends or ex-lovers and can’t let go of that connection is an obvious, intense example of it; Captain Jack letting John in close enough to get hurt (and John leaving him a way out), Hanna and Mona slipping into and out of their old BFF dynamic, Giles and Ethan having drinks together.
There’s this Buffy fic I read years ago and I remember basically nothing about it except for two lines.
SPIKE: You were my absolute everything, once upon a time.
ANGEL: But not this time.
It’s just. The enmity, and the acknowledgement that that old relationship doesn’t exist any more -- but it did once and that’s important. It gives me a lot of feelings.
All this is to say that Pretty Little Liars pulled off something impressive, that I loved. I love Hanna/Caleb to bits - it’s charming, funny, complementary-opposites who make each other better and I love them both a lot. Caleb’s my favourite PLL love interest with the exception of Maya (and Alison, to the extent that she’s Emily’s) and Hanna jockeys with Spencer for my favourite liar, so. Yeah.
And yet I am TOTALLY DOWN for Spencer/Caleb. Hanna’s guy seems great, and she’s happy, and that is awesome. The actors totally sold Spencer and Caleb’s chemistry and their having built a real connection. Spencer and Caleb have very different similarities and differences and points of connection from those between Hanna and Caleb, but it totally works to me. And Hanna and Caleb -- the awkwardness and tension, the reality that they’re not really friends any more, they’re just not in contact enough, but then Hanna’s kept something of theirs and oh, that scene. “Looks like we both got what we need.” While they're obviously not enemies OMG THAT NARRATIVE BUTTON OF MINE, PLL POUNDED IT. Hanna and Caleb are done romantically and they don’t know each other all that well any more, but there’s something very important between them. ♥ Looks like we both got what we need and that beautiful smile. What a lovely little grace note on their relationship.
I’ve always hated Caleb’s mum having ended up rich, and right now I wish even more that that wasn’t true. But still. Really enjoying this.
In other news: hmm, not Toby’s biggest fan, but whatever, he’s here. HAHA MONA AND SPENCER ARE BOTH IN POLITICS THAT IS PERFECT AND FILLS ME WITH JOY. MONA FOR PRESIDENT! Alison vs the other girls and shifting alliances and stuff should be really juicy and fun. Emily’s storyline gives me many feelings, and I totally see how she tangled herself in that situation, and omg no Emily’s dad :(
Giving Sasha Pieterse fat-girl costuming is giving me rage blackouts. She's not fat, and if she were it's actually no excuse to dress her differently, the world wouldn't explode if they saw a fat girl dressed in short skirts or a tight top on American TV without it being a LOL moment. It's particularly irritating given that Alison has a very specific sense of style we've got to know – and while she's obviously five years older now, these attempts to obscure her waistline, the very long skirts and jeans, are still Not Her.
Also, god, I don’t wanna be hurt again. BUT PLEEEEEEEEEASE VILLAIN EZRA. PLEASE.
Now to watch this week’s episode!
