1. My university’s feminism discussion group is having a fail again as regards hip-hop and misogyny. I shouldn’t be surprised; our discussion of "Monster" by Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z et al (TW for that video: sexualised dead women like WHOA) was the first time I got in a Facebook fight because BLOODY HELL. That is a shocking video and I think people who think the concept didn't come across, or were too shocked/squicked by the imagery to deal, totally have a point. But this lot didn't even acknowledge the possibility that it was a piece very much about monstrous constructions of black men especially and black women too - I mean, hello, "I'ma start rocking gold teeth and fangs/ cos that’s what a mutherfucking monster do", NOT THAT SUBTLE. And I got annoyed. Bunch of white feminists refusing to acknowledge possible complexity in a hip-hop video & song - even in Nicki's segment, which is super fabulous - I just. ARGH. And they are DOING IT AGAIN.

I just. I need to listen to some nice soothing Sasha Go Hard until the urge to link "misogynisticlyricsthatarentrap.tumblr.com" in allcaps has passed.

2. I missed Harry's birthday! Sorry kid. My writing skillz are extremely depleted right now.

3. Just read an otherwise charming interview with an author named Travis McDade in which he refers to “Hay-on-Wye in the west of England”. Sigh. Sigh. SIIIIIIIIGH.
