lokifan: Loki's illusion round his cell drops (Loki: illusion drops)
It’s my thirty-first birthday in ten minutes. I genuinely don’t know how I’m going to feel? Right now, honestly, I feel really sad.

No birthday wishes on this post please, I’ll post something else so we can do that and it won’t be weird :D

My thirtieth, I was broke and exhausted but it was still good. And I’m so, so grateful for the timing of it, because I saw a lot of my friends then, and I haven’t seen them since. Plenty of them I don’t see that often, and even though it wasn’t one of my best parties (not awful, just, the house was too small and it kinda messed with the vibes) having seen everyone pretty recently helped get me through spring and summer 2020.

So my birthday is looming really large as an anniversary. And you know, 30 was the start of a new decade, a big birthday, all that, and it’s been a lost year, and one where we’ve lost so much, so many.

OMG guys, did you see what happened yesterday?

THE STATUE OF A SLAVE TRADER IN BRISTOL GOT BROUGHT DOWN, DRAGGED AWAY, AND DUMPED IN THE RIVER!!!!!!!!!!

I’M SO THRILLED I CAN’T TELL YOU.

The guy was a slave trader who made himself a fortune in kidnapping and selling people, then donated a bunch of that fortune and got himself a statue in a place where that money was more important than the lives he’d destroyed. If you’re thinking of Cecil Rhodes etc, you’re not wrong (though Rhodes was on a level it’s pretty hard to match).

I just. YES.

cut for me blahing on about why I think this is great and the statue needed to go )

Also LMAO:

It’s easy to overstate the importance of symbolism, but I’m just gonna savour this moment for a sec.

I have been obsessing about this vote all week. It’s the only thing that could overcome FFXV stuff in my head. This weekend I’m a) moving, and b) seeing several friends I don’t see often c) at London Expo - aka a mini comic con - and then taking the week off. I SO NEED a holiday, and I’m gonna spend five days in Liverpool :D :D :D Staying with my biffle [profile] sodsta and seeing his delightful girlfriend S, and the beloved & much-missed [personal profile] creatoremagico and [personal profile] drazzi. Oh, plus I have to pack a bit, then move on Saturday, then unpack, do some laundry probably, and repack for Liverpool before we head off on Monday, while attempting to drink and get down with my bad self as much as possible. So I have lots to think about! Most of it good, if busy.

BUT OH MY GOD. Abortion is illegal - including in cases of rape, incest, and serious fetal abnormalities - and punishable by fourteen years in prison in Ireland, which is completely fucking ridiculous. And today that might change.

I hope everyone remembers Savita, a woman who died in 2012 because the hospital she was at refused to give her an abortion. (They told her ‘this is a Catholic country’ as she was dying; she was Hindu, and the baby had no chance to live anyway.) Her father and widower have both spoken out during the campaign.

My cousin Jacksparrow regularly hosts Irish & Northern Irish people who’ve come over for abortions. I donate to a charity she works with, that helps defray travel and accommodation costs. The most common reason to have an abortion is that you can’t afford it, so having to travel internationally, take time off, and get accommodation - all within a limited time - is obviously a real problem. An estimated 170 000 women have left Ireland for an abortion since 1983.

They’re the lucky ones, in many ways, of course. Especially the ones who can have someone with them, to help take care of them afterwards. Up to 2000 women take the abortion pill a year - and that’s bought online, so it can be hard to trust, and sometimes Customs will seize them.

Northern Irish people will still be completely fucked over, of course. There are women being prosecuted there; the UN has said it’s an abuse of human rights. It’s a scandal and a shame, that abortion rights are so hideously limited in my own country [meaning within the UK]. But I was at a protest over this a few months ago and there seemed to be some hope that an Irish repeal of the eighth would help.

Okay, this post has lost any internal structure it may have had, but I can’t help it. NOT THE CHURCH, NOT THE STATE, WOMEN* MUST DECIDE THEIR FATE

I had a great time at Kupocon, a one-day Final Fantasy thing here in London. I met new people and hung out with friends and had a blast. One of the big things that helped [tumblr.com profile] bestchocobro drag me into FFXV fandom was him having a blast at cons and saying how lovely the fandom was, and he’s totally right <3

I came up in fan-run cons - which Kupo absolutely is, actually, but what I mean there is ‘where the standard thing is fan-run panels and events, rather than the key being getting as many creators as you can and doing signings.’ And like, the vivid Kupo memories are mostly gonna be about playing cards with interesting forfeits, and watching my cardsharp friend do tricks, and helping a mate in amazing MT cosplay to navigate the dealers’ room, and -

Okay, okay, I’m just embarrassed about this post being all How Adam Croasdell Made Me Cry (Not In A Bad Way). BUT WHATEVER LET ME TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT )

TL;DR: I’m partially blind, which was diagnosed as permanent around the same time I (a spoiler-free n00b) found FFXV, and I told Adam Croasdell Iggy had been really helpful and he was really nice and possibly psychic and I managed to not cry until later but omg I am EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED.

Hi guys! I know I’ve been silent for MONTHS, which is crazy for me; it’s been lots of work, then lots of social stuff, then lots of erised fic-writing. But I wanted to post about this: this weekend my BFF Miss Godfrey got married. The wedding was beautiful and sparkly and full of joy, just like her. I was a bridesmaid and it was a great day :D

I spent my Friday rushing around between work and bridesmaid errands and things still didn’t really work, because I am a flail. The zip had broken on my dress, and the dry cleaner’s I got to iron it had lost the belt, and I forgot my bouquet and didn’t realise until I was at the B&B I and the bride & family were staying in - in Norwich, the city where we went to uni and the bride and groom met, two hours by train from London. ARGH. Tiny bit of a meltdown at 2a.m. that night, however much I reminded myself that it’s not possible to ruin a wedding unless you’re one of the people getting married.

But actually it was a really wonderful day )

Guys it’s been a week and I think it’s going to stick. Horrifyingly.

Of course there’ll always be AUs. And on an intellectual level I think changing mediums and introducing a bunch more creative voices means that the play can’t be part of the text of the novels, so it’s not really ‘canon’ in that sense - but it does FEEL like part of the whole to me. I just…

I can’t ship Harry/Draco in a CC-compliant world.

I’m thrilled with their characterisation and evolving relationship in the play but )

GUYS GUYS GUYS

GUESS WHAT

I got recced on [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom!!!

ALL HAIL [livejournal.com profile] wwmrsweasleydo!

Seriously, I have yearned for a rec on [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom for God knows how long. I have always found it to be a peerless resource, stuffed with brilliant recs from reccers with excellent taste. I mean, getting recced there, that's how you know you've arrived.

[personal profile] nixied is leaving me on Thursday when it seems she's barely arrived and I have a terrible sunburn that has now sprung up in infected blisters. (I shouldn't have worked this weekend, it was fine before. The infection doesn't seem too bad - I drained the blisters and what came out was clearly not just water, but I am spraying antiseptic spray like it's going out of style and hoping). My little sister is being harassed horribly by her ex-boyfriend. I am thousands of miles away from most of my friends and some of them are going to the Globe to see The Tempest without me, the bastards.

BUT I AM FULL OF HAPPINESS RIGHT NOW

TIME FOR THE DANCE OF WRITERLY VALIDATION

HUZZAH, I SAY, HUZZAH!

I've found shelter in the backroom of a restaurant. The city is beginning to burn and the looting is heavy, but there is still wifi: congratulations Ho Chi Minh.

It started with the plague. This is a tight-knit city; people sit on the pavements all day, everyone cheek by jowl, and once you're inside it's air conditioning constantly recycling the air, sending the pathogens through. The first sign is the cough.

...I am coughing as I write this.

After that, it's the fever, and finally the boils. Then you're dead. It moves faster than you could possibly believe. The fires are being set to try to burn out the infection - that or because people know they've only got hours left and they want to go out with a nice view - I don't know if it's too late. Close your borders if there's still time. Good luck to London: I heard about the tsunami. My thoughts are with you.

I guess the world could only handle so many years of [profile] dora_the_nymph spreading awesome about before it up and conflagrated. Happy birthday bitch. DO YOU SEE WHAT YOU'VE DONE?!

Okay, so. I heard about this last week, but there were a few people I wanted to tell in person; there are still people I’d like to tell in person but it’s got too weird that you guys don’t know. And it is very exciting if also scary.

I got a job! Hurray! I am going to spend a year teaching English in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam )
