Brief rant

FFS. Things that drive me mad in fandom: when people assume the only reason you disagree with them is because you identify with a character or ship a pairing. Particularly since I very rarely identify with characters at all; Faith from Buffy is the only one I can think of for any of my fandoms. (Pansy kinda-sorta in the last couple of years from HP, but that’s down to a very very specific situation and I’m not sure how much/if it bleeds into my response to her in canon; I haven’t read the books since well before it began.)

And the shipping stuff is often really off-base as well: I remember a frustrating conversation years ago, where I said that it maddens me that Harry and Snape never have a conversation after Harry finds out. I go back and forth on whether that’s an artistic mistake to me; it’s certainly deliberate, the sense of close-but-no-cigar. And the person I was talking to got… not condescending, exactly, but it was clear from their responses that they thought I was a Snarry shipper? When Snarry actually actively squicks me (much as I love and adore many Snarry shippers) but like, come on, I DO NOT HAVE TO BE INVESTED IN A SEXUAL OR ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEM in order to think their relationship is central to the series!!!

And today. Different fandom, different platform, but the same general vibe of “it’s just because you have x emotion that you can’t see the truth” and NO, I DON’T FEEL THAT WAY, I just interpret this differently from you. It’s unintentionally dismissive and condescending.

So I have reached a milestone in my career as a teacher: the first time I hated a student.

A bunch of my friends have heard about this student, because I had to spend fifteen hours a week with him for WEEKS and he was... dramatically, astonishingly awful. I’d come in every day after class and complain about him to my colleagues, and when I tried not to because I didn’t want to be boring, they'd ask because his horribleness was entertaining in its sheer scale.

I’m sure I’ve missed some things even in this epic post.

The worst part was that I didn’t want to chuck him out (though the Director of Studies made it clear I could at my discretion) because he was my guarantee of full-time hours until Christmas. Now I don’t have that because he's been chucked out. But I feel ZERO regret.

Bloke saw me checking bus timetable as I got off my bus at 2am, asked what I was looking for. I replied I was fine in the tone that the women reading this will definitely recognise: friendly because probably dude is harmless, polite because maybe he isn't, final because no more of this interaction please.

cut due to some unfun scary stuff, though I am unharmed )

PS: Loncon has been great! I will post about that today or tomorrow. But I just had to express my OMG NO.

Seriously hacked off

So a couple of days ago I got this review on ff.net of my fic Respect Your Elders, that I’ve only just looked at. It consists of one line:

Lovely story, but I was under the impression that Shapinglight from LJ wrote it.

joomla visitor

...

It’s anonymous, meaning I can’t reply. There isn’t a mechanism, to my knowledge, for me to respond in the ‘reviews’ segment publically on that site.

Now I don’t mind the confusion. Respect Your Elders is Giles/Spike smut, and [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight’s written a bunch of great Giles/Spike fic, she’s who I associate with the pairing too. It’s easy to misremember this stuff and I’m not going to get precious about it.

But. The phrasing.

Maybe I’m being oversensitive but that really looks like someone semi-politely semi-accusing me of plagiarism. Particularly because it’s anonymous, but even before I noticed that I was like ‘wtf… this is like the warning-shot review before you start compiling links for stop_plagiarism.’ And there’s nowhere for me to respond, and perhaps link them to the damn LJ post.

I know it doesn’t come right out and say it, but I literally can’t read it any other way. Especially the phrasing - “lovely” story, and “from LJ”, I just. I HOPE RIGHT AFTER THIS THE “GUEST” DID SOME RESEARCH AND FELT ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.

Dear “Guest”,

i hope you fall into a pit of bad anime dubs

No love,

me.

1. If you have an AO3 account, please go and fill in the AO3 census! It took me less than five minutes and definitely won’t take you more than ten. It’d be interesting - plus there is always very little demographic data on fandom and the stuff we have is all pretty old. So do fill it in!

Sigh

1. My university’s feminism discussion group is having a fail again as regards hip-hop and misogyny. I shouldn’t be surprised; our discussion of "Monster" by Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z et al (TW for that video: sexualised dead women like WHOA) was the first time I got in a Facebook fight because BLOODY HELL. That is a shocking video and I think people who think the concept didn't come across, or were too shocked/squicked by the imagery to deal, totally have a point. But this lot didn't even acknowledge the possibility that it was a piece very much about monstrous constructions of black men especially and black women too - I mean, hello, "I'ma start rocking gold teeth and fangs/ cos that’s what a mutherfucking monster do", NOT THAT SUBTLE. And I got annoyed. Bunch of white feminists refusing to acknowledge possible complexity in a hip-hop video & song - even in Nicki's segment, which is super fabulous - I just. ARGH. And they are DOING IT AGAIN.

I just. I need to listen to some nice soothing Sasha Go Hard until the urge to link "misogynisticlyricsthatarentrap.tumblr.com" in allcaps has passed.

2. I missed Harry's birthday! Sorry kid. My writing skillz are extremely depleted right now.

3. Just read an otherwise charming interview with an author named Travis McDade in which he refers to “Hay-on-Wye in the west of England”. Sigh. Sigh. SIIIIIIIIGH.

In defence of romance

lokifan: black Converse against a black background (Default)
FYI: as ever am open for discussion and disagreement; I will still like you! But I will probably explain why I disagree, so.

[personal profile] teprometo linked to [personal profile] jelazakazone’s interesting bit of meta and discussion on the subject of how we define gen fic and romance. It’s interesting reading the comments, not least because I seem to be a lot more conservative in defining something as genfic than some people. Plot-focussed romance I still consider romance; if the romance (including an emotional arc between an established couple) is important enough to have an important climax I tend to think of the fic as “plotty slash/femmeslash/whatever” than “genfic with romance subplot”.

But that’s not the main thing that struck me about the comments on the post.

The main thing that struck me was people hating on “romance” as a term, as a concept, as a genre.

:( :( :( :(

It’s not even a lot of people. It’s just another, pretty minor example of this... thing in fandom. This thing which really bothers me and makes me sad. The commenters who said the things I quote below haven’t brought on this surge of OMG NO (or I’d be replying to those comments directly as opposed to replying to one and then writing more wide-ranging ranty meta). But it’s an example.

when somebody says 'romance' I think of Mills and Boon and all those other crappy sappy books that I would never touch )

I just started a book called God Is Not One by Stephen Prothero. So far it's excellent, but it just cited Winston Churchill as an example of someone who was influential and great, and also good. Which lit the blue touchpaper.

Winston Churchill was... )

OMG WHAT IS THIS FUCKERY.

Okay, so remember my crazed rant about LJ’s newest fail?

IT GOT WORSE.

I’m sure most/all of you have heard already, but just so you know: Livejournal has TURNED ON automatic payments on some paid accounts. If you - like me - have a paid account with automatic payments switched off, you’d better check here. I still have the email from months ago when I turned off automatic payments. If I hadn’t seen these links, LJ would have got more of my money when I specifically hit buttons to NOT give it to them.

It’s unclear whether it’s a glitch - from what I can tell it hasn’t happened to every paid account - but the timing is, to say the least, suspicious. And as far as I’m concerned it’s on the very edge of corporate fraud.

Anyway, beyond all that: check out [profile] rollback88. It’s a comm where you can fill out a poll about your opinions on Release 88 and which things specifically are or aren’t causing you difficulties. Providing hard data about all the users who want which things fixed, and you don’t have to fight CAPTCHA to do it! Hurray!

Misfits again

lokifan: black Converse against a black background (Default)
So, the second Misfits episode. I enjoyed it hugely once again, despite the fact that I am going to rant enormously about parts of it.

First, what I loved: OMG CURTIS IS ♥ ♥ ♥. Seriously. Not only did he publically call out homophobic comments, he did it when the comments came from the girl he fancies. He wins. And DAMNIT I WANT MORE.

I want more of practically everybody, actually. I like Nathan, and his storyline with the old woman – yay for old-people-also-want-sex! – was charming. But I wanted an ensemble programme! So stop focussing on Robert Sheehan’s big eyes and gimme some ensemble action. Incidentally: cannot work out if Simon’s obsessively watching naked!Jeremy was vindication of my he’s-gay-or-bi theory, or just a sign that shy, internet-liking types like him are crazy and sexually perverse.

The whole inevitable rape attempt thing was... well, inevitable. But it makes me unhappy, because what Alisha’s sexy-power does is make a very unpleasant rape myth reality: she is literally so attractive that men cannot help themselves. They have to force themselves on her, because she makes them so mindless with lust.

The programme made a point of having Alisha say, “it’s not my fault if they can’t keep it in their trousers.” This is true, but... well, it’s not their fault either, as things stand. And she can learn to manipulate the power, which could just go in all sorts of unpleasant directions.

Okay, now here’s the thing that really pissed me off. Cut for the rantiest rant I’ve ever ranted )

My family comes out with all sorts of stupid stuff. Youngest Sister used to be the virtuoso – asking me to be quiet when I said how hot Freema Agyeman looked because it was “weird” comes to mind – but Middle Sister is – ARRRGH. She’d already said something about how George Michael had “pretty eyes”, so she couldn’t believe people didn’t know he was gay. I said something playful about how I didn’t think that was how you tell; from there we got into her views on homosexuality. Ie, men are gay because they don’t have enough testosterone.

We Love The NHS

lokifan: black Converse against a black background (Default)
As I always say before a post on American politics: I generally try not to post about them for the same reason I keep quiet in discussions on male circumcision. I have an opinion, but it’s not my issue. But when American politicians are saying that the NHS “rations care to the elderly”, has ‘death panels’, denies care to patients if their care will cost more than £14k in six months, refuses to allow pap smears for women under twenty-five – well, then I really feel I can and must speak up. Because all that stuff is rubbish. American politicians are welcome to blather about the evils of ‘socialised healthcare’ but not when they use the National Health as their scapegoat.

The NHS has a lot of problems. But our doctors and nurses are bound by the Hippocratic Oath too. They would never do any of those things.

It is free at the point of use. )

European elections rant

Wednesday, 10 June 2009 02:33 pm
lokifan: black Converse against a black background (Default)
A rant about the results of the European elections, in which member nations of the EU elect their representatives in the European Parliament. If one of you guys reads this and needs explanations, I'll happily give them. But I won't be offended if nobody does; I just felt the need to rant about the results, and the state of British politics generally, and the fact that in a few years David Cameron will be my country's leader.

Ugh. This was depressing in just about every way. )
