TL;DR: so there’s this HP fandom person, MelusinaHP, who I was friends with for years. She’s a militant TERF now. I wrote her birthday fic or fic to her prompts way back in the day. Should I delete her name off the Author’s Notes on AO3 given how comprehensively over our friendship is, and given she might still be a bit of a presence in HP fandom?

Someone fully ripped off my old Harry/Draco fic Aftershocks and posted it as their own, in order to add an author’s note being like “yaoi is bad and stupid”. Like, what???
Honestly, I’m pissed off they stole my work, but it’s also just so weird to see someone doing “if you avoid reading any straight fics, that is actually heterophobia” and ‘We don't just see hot people on screen and immediately think “OMG I want them rubbing their genitals together right now!!!!1”’ in the year of our Lord 2023. They said something about winning the interwebs in the comments. This is someone way, way too old to think this is funny.
It’s also kind of weird and funny to me that they’re like… saying this is trolling but they also earnestly believe their ‘point’. Like they’re simultaneously making fun of people for recognising the fic as stolen (because it’s ‘sad’ to have read enough fic to recognise this one) and having weird dust-ups about how reverse racism is real in the comments.
And for all the open trollishness of the author’s note at the end, they didn’t admit to having stolen it. The other two fics on their account do seem to be actual parodies they wrote themselves, which obviously just got no attention as people scrolled by, so they decided to steal a real, decently popular fic and just add ‘surprise ending’ to the tags, in which the surprise ending is the screed about how m/m pairings are bad actually. Their last reply before people started calling them out on the theft includes a part that really makes no sense unless they were hoping/assuming people wouldn’t realise that they didn’t write the fic themselves: why shouldn't trollfics be allowed on AO3? This is a valid form of parody as far as I'm concerned and the South Park-style ending to this cracks me up. People just need to lighten up a little. I'm not trying to stop anyone from doing what they want, just trying to poke fun at the nonsensicalness of it all. And BTW, I only use this account to post fics which I anticipate will be unpopular due to their subject matter.
This all feels so 2006. WTAF.

alley_skywalker asked what fandoms (if any) are you into these days? Any current OTPs? My main fandom these days is FFXV. Video games = not traditionally my thing, but FFXV overcame that with the power of friendship. (And kidnapping -
sodsta introduced me to it by showing me the bit where one of the main characters gets kidnapped and there’s some level of off-screen torture). I’m still like, delighted to see a choice bit of Buffy/Faith art, etc, like I never really leave old fandoms. But FFXV is definitely the main one; I’ve done a ton of RPing there, which I never did before this fandom, and that got me through the first lockdown. I hope to write more fic!

2. People to talk to about FFXV on Dreamwidth, haha. Though really I need to make more posts about it, and other things I wanna talk about more - Cursed Child opinions! fantasy novels! theatre! - for that to happen.
3. Somnus and Aera icons. Aranea, Crowe, and Luna art. (Bonus points for femmeslash.)
4. Somnus/Ardyn content. WHERE IS IT YOU COWARDS. This drives me nuts because THEY ARE BROTHERS and we know how fandom do!!! And one of them is a villain who’s easily-woobified within this pairing! The other one’s tragic too, and all blank-faced so you can make him show his emotions unwillingly! Like, there’s SO MUCH fannish catnip here - I didn’t necessarily expect the fic to be good but I expected it to be there! This wouldn’t be a central pairing for me necessarily, more one I read occasionally, but there is literally fucking nothing on AO3. It must be somewhere secretly shared like we’re back in the era of listservs or something. Bloody antis ruining everything.
(Yes, I am going to write at least one myself and put it unlocked on AO3 and I do not care at all.)

Dec. 16th, 2018 03:27 amWOW it’s been TWO MONTHS since I posted. That seems insane because I actually have been mostly keeping up with DW! And with Tumblr at least enough to have my queue full, although I was never any good at it. But I’ve been very busy RL (holidays, then exams, then a randomly intense week at work) and then it felt somehow very difficult and taxing to post. IDK, it takes more social energy to do it the longer you’re out of the habit, and I did fall out of it.
Anyway. TUMBLR.
...I mean. This is a predictable disaster for those of us who’ve been around long enough to remember Strikethrough and Boldthrough on LJ, to remember Archive Of Our Own wasn’t named that purely as a feminist reference but also because it’s necessary to protect our content. Also predictable for those of us watching FOSTA and SESTA, and the new EU laws, and Apple’s walled garden, and who’ve seen the way Patreon gatekeeps sex workers out of their ‘professional’ tier and Dreamwidth got kicked off Paypal way back when.
But it being predictable doesn’t make it any less sucky.
I’m on Pillowfort and Dreamwidth as lokifan. I’m on Discord at lokifan #5709 and gonna try to be around there more. Staying on Tumblr for the moment but I’m terrible at it already, and… well the plan to make an effort with the platform, and talk to the people I like there more, seems pointless now.

Kinkshamed by King Regis. No really
Sep. 28th, 2018 11:55 pmI keep meaning to post about this and not, because recently I’ve been at work 9am - 8:30pm. (But much of it isn’t paid hours. The gig economy sucks.) BUT THAT’S RIDICULOUS cos it was crazy.
Three weeks ago was Kupocon, this great little Final Fantasy con. This was my second and I was, once again, very very aware that I’d be getting a lot more out of it if I knew the franchise; it’s a tight-knit little community and I’m bad at joining it in certain ways. Didn’t dance and/or talk to strangers enough for how much fun I had when I did it. BUT still SO fun <3 I didn’t go to the actual programming; I saw some good friends and a BFF, and bought too much gorgeous art and laughed a lot and ate and drank far too much and… got kinkshamed by King Regis.
SERIOUSLY.
This was sometime between 11pm and midnight. @bestchocobro/sodsta is legless, I’m only slightly less drunk but still trying to look after him. @bestchocobro’s girlfriend has gone to bed, so it’s just the two of us in our hapless drunken state. We see a luggage trolley on the way back to the party.
S: Me and Girlfriend wanna get one of those. It’d be great for kink - you could tie someone up and - *gestures broadly*
Me: ? Ohhh, right! Yeah!
S: You could move them really easily -
Me: Yeah! *clambers onto the luggage trolley and kneels up on it, with hands round the weird gold baton thing at the top, as if asking to be cuffed to it* OMG, why isn’t this a classic pervertible? You guys are actually geniuses!
S: Yeah, you could -
Me: *sees Jon Campling - venerable actor, epic beard-owner, daddy of Final Fantasy XV, and King Regis - coming down the corridor towards us, on the phone to someone. Our eyes meet*
Me (in tones of anguish): Oh my God.
Jon Campling: *grins*
S: *turns around, sees, makes sound like duck hacking up a swan*
Jon Campling: *continues along his merry way past us, clearly enjoying the horror he’s inflicted, while I scramble off the luggage trolley and try to look like someone who doesn’t even know what a ‘pervertible’ IS*
Me & S: *tell everyone we see for the next hour that we were KINKSHAMED BY REGIS oh my GOD*
We actually didn’t tell everyone immediately on seeing them, and I even saw people that night and never actually went for OH MY GOD THE BEST WORST TALENT-AT-CON ANECDOTE JUST HAPPENED TO ME, which I feel deserves some credit.
Worst part? S was cosplaying Prompto, whereas I was in a random clubbing dress and have pink-purple-and-blue hair. S is a fantastic Prompto and the best at the con (she says without bias :p) but also, you can’t swing a giant sword without hitting a Prompto at Kupocon. My hair is distinctly more memorable.
I might see him in October and watch him remember that time he caught me kneeling on a luggage rack, cheerfully yelling with my drunk friend about how great it’d be for kink.

This is gonna sound like it’s cheating but I’ve been meaning to post about it for a while, so…
Obviously being in fandom has changed my life in innumerable ways - I mean, many of my close or best friends are people I met through fandom. But being in fandom, and especially reading fanfic and meta, has influenced my ethics. A lot.
Which sounds terrifying, haha, and the start of some kind of clickbait article about fandom ruining young people - which will definitely become more of a thing as fandom gets ever more mainstream.
I was sixteen when I entered fandom and I’m about to turn twenty-eight, so those are some influential years. Now I don’t exactly mean that fandom has influenced what I think is right and wrong - it probably has, but not in any way I could easily unpick, and I suspect that it’s a feedback loop to the extent that it’s true. Like, what I already thought was right and wrong was perhaps settled and entrenched by being in fandom - after all, fandom has lots of disagreements within itself, we’re a bunch of people who often strongly disagree more than a monolith, even when we’re just talking about the smaller communities I’ve been part of within wider fandom. I was already interested in fighting inequality, I already had ideas about responsibility and community-building and kindness in the face of vulnerability, and fandom just gave me new ways to express them and new examples of them.
But there has been a change: ( the way fandom looks at characters influences the way I look at people )

Kupocon and Adam Croasdell making me cry

I came up in fan-run cons - which Kupo absolutely is, actually, but what I mean there is ‘where the standard thing is fan-run panels and events, rather than the key being getting as many creators as you can and doing signings.’ And like, the vivid Kupo memories are mostly gonna be about playing cards with interesting forfeits, and watching my cardsharp friend do tricks, and helping a mate in amazing MT cosplay to navigate the dealers’ room, and -
Okay, okay, I’m just embarrassed about this post being all How Adam Croasdell Made Me Cry (Not In A Bad Way). BUT WHATEVER ( LET ME TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT )
TL;DR: I’m partially blind, which was diagnosed as permanent around the same time I (a spoiler-free n00b) found FFXV, and I told Adam Croasdell Iggy had been really helpful and he was really nice and possibly psychic and I managed to not cry until later but omg I am EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED.

1. More tropey femmeslash. I waaaaaaant. I think fandom would be better if there was more tropey femmeslash in general, but I personally would like turned-into-a-dog!Kara/turned-into-a-cat!Cat, bodyguard!Aranea/Luna, and sharing-a-bed Luna/Cindy.
2. More comforty hurt/comfort in FFXV. I mean, I love the hurt/comfort we have and I don’t want it to change, but we could add more! And some of it could be more healing! My god there is SO MUCH HURT in the ratio in this fandom!!! Is it because to be in this fandom you have to accept/enjoy horrible things happening to your darling faves??? Did Square Enix give us all Stockholm Syndrome???

knowmefirst sent me sparkly snowflakes, wickedblonde sent me elegant little Danish children getting some Christmas greenery, and writcraft sent me the cutest little doe <3 Vix, your card appears to have vanished at some point in the un-blutacking from my walls process :( But I remember liking it!!! And someone sent me a collage-y card with a Prongs on it, but I can’t read the handwriting on the name!!! Sorry! I like it a lot!

This is for me and it’s SO SWEET <333 I love the slight sense of the numinous and creepy, which I think is a part of all the best Christmas things, and the acknowledgement that London rarely sees snow! And a family Christmas with Teddy coming, d'awwwww!

OMG. Sotitti’s fic In Which Weasley and Draco Meet in a Sex Club is one of very favourite pieces of PWP ever - it’s taut and intense and dodgy and kinky and blazing hot, and shows why they’re both getting what they need from each other. AND THIS IS IN THE SAME UNIVERSE. Only even kinkier and hotter.
They’re in a relationship and back at the sex club, and they see Draco’s good friend Theo, and Ron loves humiliating Draco and Draco loves being humiliated, so we know what’s about to happen. I love Draco's uncertainty, and Ron being so ruthless in pushing his limits and Draco knowing there's just no escape for him - but then Draco's so happy and subspacey and the fluffy D/s of it all, I looove it. And so many perfect realistic details, like the way the bondage keeps him off-balance.
Also, Ron talking to Draco's friend like they're good mates and discussing Draco's arse? I CANNOT. I CANNOT AT ALL. And omg Ron giving people permission to touch him then sending them away ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It’s a nice way to begin the year and helps me restart, as opposed to purely spending the time catching up from December (though I’ll do some of that too, no doubt). And I love the opportunity to talk about fandom and celebrate it.
Day 2
In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. I just finished a massive fest fic. Under a deadline, having been given many extensions, very kindly. It’s about twice as long as my previous longest fic - it’s the longest thing I’ve written, in fact, original or fanfic. (I should really get on an original novel draft.) I got a big rush of relief when I heard back from the mod but man, I barely have any feelings. All my feelings went into the last week of getting it done.
I have little-to-no sense of whether it’s good. I hope so, though!
More discussion of it later, perhaps, once I can claim it.
Mooooving on -
So my interwebs silence for the last few months has been a lot to do with this fic, as well as the various RL things that led to me needing extensions (a hideous cold, my BFF getting married, the joy of Hallowe’en.) And Episode Ignis, a DLC for my new fandom Final Fantasy XV, came out DAYS ago and I haven’t watched any playthroughs or done anything, because I knew it would cover me in Iggy feelings and I needed to finish this Potter fic.
And I’ve been free for nearly six hours (I finished the fic all night, then collapsed and slept all day) and I still haven’t watched it. I know it’s got a second ending, where you get to live in a happy AU instead of the tragedy of canon - and loooooool I love that even the creators are writing fix-it fic. But omg. Nooooo. I’m scared.
I WILL WATCH IT IN A MINUTE. Probably.
I do really, really want to enjoy some fandom time, playing and RPing and writing and reading, without the sense of omg I should be writing that fic. I’ve not been on Tumblr since Hallowe’en. I haven’t seen the new Star Wars. I haven’t seen Thor. So going on my FFXV Tumblr at least is gonna involve being enjoyably spoiled. And I love these characters so much, I want some more time with them.
But noooooo. OMG the trailer alone, it gives me so many feelings.
