GO AND VOTE FOR KATNISS

Katniss got into the Final Four for March Madness but she's LOSING! I don't know who Rosa from Brooklyn Nine-Nine is, I'm sure she's great, but KATNISS. She volunteers to die for her sister, she is brave and clever and resourceful, she mourns a girl she was meant to try to kill and kickstarts the fightback against the idea that the oppressed should brutalise each other instead of fighting those who oppress them, she defends those who colluded in oppression from hurt, she fights and suffers crippling depression AND THEN SHE DECIDES AGAINST REVENGE. She is allowed to not be merely likeable. She has to work and train and struggle to be part of the rebellion, rather than a figurehead, because she is talented and ferocious but not Super Special. She didn't want children because she couldn't bear what they would suffer, and then after everything she found enough hope to risk it. (Don't get into it with me about this, guys.)

KATNISS IS A BIG DAMN HERO.

(Also: such_heights wrote a post about f_march_madness and its tendency to big up minor characters, women characters, etc and why that's NOT about proving yourself more politically correct than thou. Money quote: And then there's this... line: FMM is not about pretending we are all better social justice warriors than we are, it's about a Deathmatch of favorites.

And I'm so annoyed because that's not even what's happening. You're not polling each fandom for their favourite character on the show, you're polling all of fandom to pick characters from a bunch of fandoms that will include shows that they have never seen or actively dislike. And that's where the voting for minor characters comes from....

FMM isn't a vote of fandom favourites within each fandom, it's a vote of fandom favourites via fannish osmosis.)
