lokifanMy last Rectober post, ahis week is pretty much all about my gleeful exploration of the Avatar: the Last Airbender fandom. I love this canon so much, guys! And I am so beyond late, but I have also spent yonks NOT following links because I knew I’d get round to it someday, and OMG THE EXCITEMENT. I’m also discovering where the Korra/Asami stuff I have YEARNED for is hiding. S2 might not want to give us any shared screentime with them BUT I DON’T CARE. This is the Avatar/angsty rich kid rejecting their evil father pairing for me!
LOL. Not that Asami and Zuko don’t have parallels - but she is so much more together than him. I started giggling as I wrote ‘angsty’ because Asami is a light spring rain and Zuko is an angst TYPHOON.
I am so so tragically late for this fandom. But I don’t care, I will read and watch ALL OF THE THINGS, because I need more of these characters. And this is the only fandom since Buffy where I have simultaneously adored the canon ships and wanted to multiship my little heart out. Although I also just want whatever the A:TLA equivalent of gen casefic is. YEEEARNING.
Also, if you wanted to rec me an Avatar icon maker or comm, I would not be opposed to that. I have a couple of great Korra icons but it's just not enough.
Harry Potter fic
Best Laid Plans bywoldy. Alicia/Katie, 1200 words, PG. Summary: Angelina is crap at some things, but her strengths include Quidditch tactics, mixing deliciously deadly cocktails, and being a bloody fantastic friend.
Matchmaking stories aren’t generally my thing, but this is incredibly cute and fun - I love the different stages of Angelina’s schemes to get her friends together and the ending.

This is so so lovely! I can't TELL you how excited I was to see this fic (Natasha femmeslash, and Natasha/Steve, and one of the amazingarsenicjade’s hurt/comfort love stories! OMG!!!) Maria and Natasha negotiating a life together despite the damage they both carry, and eventually inviting Steve into their home, is beautiful. I love that it's not easy for Maria to deal with Natasha's damage even as she understands, and how Natasha finally manages to express her love, and the whole theme of finding and making home. And Steve drawing pin-up!Maria and Tasha and Natasha going to Pepper for help and the final note. <33333
Avatar: The Last Airbender fic
The Usual Reasons bywildgoosery. Sokka/Zuko, ~9900 words, Teen. Summary: Sokka would swear, later on, that it was completely innocent when it started.
Okay, so I read this becausesistermagpie recced it and I’ve been finally, blissfully going through her Avatar tag. She was so correct. It’s funny and IC, and totally works - guys the same age connecting over girls and mistakes and fear of failure, and also having some urges. Sokka is SO LOVELY, funny and making terrible puns and just really functional and great, which is nice since Zuko is such an enormous ball of fail. He is so awkward and snappish and Sokka handles it so well. And their relationships with Mai and Suki stay important - this is very much friends-with-benefits, the focus being on how they make friends, and omg I am so happy.
The Water Tribe Wife Club. Sokka/Suki/Zuko, 500 words, NC-17. Prompt was “The Southern Water Tribe judge a man's wealth by how many wives he has and Sokka counts Zuko as one of his wives despite the protesting from the Fire Nation prince.”
This is funny, quietly sexy pillow-talk and weirdly IC for a threesome between these guys. There are a couple of “the Kyoshian”s but it’s still totally worth it for the discussion of different marriage practices in their home nations and Sokka being completely adorable.

So having only recently watched Airbender, but having been with Korra from almost the start, this was the PERFECT vid to find. So many great visual parallels, such great editing - the bit with Korra airbending cut with Aang airbending, and her smile, was my favourite - but omg, Korra falling and Ozai falling. I love this song and it is so so perfect for them. Just. The Team Avatars coming together, and Aang as "king of night vision, king of insight" but also the pain and responsibility and the way the Avatars do have to pay for the mistakes made by their previous incarnations. Considering the most recent episodes and the revelation of big screw-ups right at the start, it's even more perfect.
Bloodbenders Build A Levee byattackfish. Hama, Katara, Yakone, Tarlokk, Noatak; Abuse, Murder-Suicide, Character Death, Violence. Summary: To bloodbend is to take back control.
This is done simply and well, and ouch, it’s really dark; the cycle of abuse comes through clearly - the bloodbenders are victimised as part of their training (maybe not inherently, but it’s what we’re always shown) and victimise the next down the line. Not Katara, of course, but she was tempted.
Fast Car bydamkianna Korra/Asami. Summary: I'll drive you like a fast car.
SQUUUUUUUUEEEE. This makes me so happy! Really cool creation of an alternate story by repurposing the clips; I think Korra’s big eyes after Asami’s sparkly shaking out her hair was my favourite. :D :D :D The link also has “Dynamite” which is a fun, dancey gen vid about Korra, Asami and Lin being awesome, so check that out!
Somewhere in the Middle bylizbee. Mai, Mai/Zuko. Summary: For Mai, the personal is political.
Mai! I love Mai, she’s fantastic in herself, and I really like her relationship with Zuko and how it changes her, and this video shows both of those along with some of the complexities of her relationship with Azula and the Fire Nation. The song is perfect - atmospheric and smoky-voiced, and “you and me and the devil makes three” is on a clip of chilling perfection.

This is a lovely tribute vid. I could do with a bit less literalness for the “lions make you brave” refrain, but then one of the charms of vids for fantasy series is literal interpretations of lyrics. And I love the sentiment, and the lyrics are perfect. I can’t decide which bit is my favourite - crying, young Zuko before his father burnt him shifting to redeemed, healthier grown Zuko, or the great hero shot of Suki to “you don’t have to feel safe to feel unafraid”.

How could I NOT rec this?? It is all of Avatar: The Last Airbender vidded to 2009’s United State of Pop, which is one of my favourite mash-ups - favourite songs, period. It is dancey joy and shifting moods and so many great moments are in this vid, it gives me so many feels. Plus it made me want a supercut of Zuko falling down, haha. Sokka, Aang and Katara do their share of falling down but Zuko gets slammed painfully, man.
