Yeah, I think the film does it very well. It changes a LOT though - makes Harry more aggressive in questioning Draco, makes Draco more aggressive in his responses. They're duelling, and more in control of their emotions, so Draco's half-cast "crucio" seems much less of a spasm of rage/panic and more considered, and the same for Harry's Sectumsempra. And that afterwards it has Ginny completely flip her response - in the book she says Hermione should be glad Harry "had something good up his sleeve" and defends Harry, and the kiss/getting together is a moment of triumph after she wins at Quidditch, whereas in the film she demands he get rid of the book and that's the quiet kiss, after they do that. Which I think is kinda telling.
