Fannish place names
Jun. 22nd, 2012 04:38 pmGuys, I was wondering... am I the only one who really notices fannish place names? Stuff that reminds you of fandom things? Because I do that all the time. I notice street/place names anyway - it’s like with names for make-up shades, they just delight me, only they have more history attached. But fandom ones make me extra-pleased.
In Norwich I passed Godric Place on my way to uni, and there’s a Lestrange St. Here in east London there’s a Phoenix pub, which reminds me of
annephoenix, and a Canton St like the Doctor Who character. The name of the street I was living on before had a fannish connotation too, and so does the new one. This new street reminds me of a very tough character in a similar situation to me, and it genuinely makes me feel stronger. When I first moved into the area, noticing the pub and Canton St made it feel more like home.
It’s that combination of secret glee at finding significance in something apparently innocuous, and feeling like these characters, and fandom as a comforting community, are here with me, and also imagining all your responses to these things...
Okay, well at least if it’s just me, LJ is a good place to reveal your secret crazy.
