Brief rant

FFS. Things that drive me mad in fandom: when people assume the only reason you disagree with them is because you identify with a character or ship a pairing. Particularly since I very rarely identify with characters at all; Faith from Buffy is the only one I can think of for any of my fandoms. (Pansy kinda-sorta in the last couple of years from HP, but that’s down to a very very specific situation and I’m not sure how much/if it bleeds into my response to her in canon; I haven’t read the books since well before it began.)

And the shipping stuff is often really off-base as well: I remember a frustrating conversation years ago, where I said that it maddens me that Harry and Snape never have a conversation after Harry finds out. I go back and forth on whether that’s an artistic mistake to me; it’s certainly deliberate, the sense of close-but-no-cigar. And the person I was talking to got… not condescending, exactly, but it was clear from their responses that they thought I was a Snarry shipper? When Snarry actually actively squicks me (much as I love and adore many Snarry shippers) but like, come on, I DO NOT HAVE TO BE INVESTED IN A SEXUAL OR ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEM in order to think their relationship is central to the series!!!

And today. Different fandom, different platform, but the same general vibe of “it’s just because you have x emotion that you can’t see the truth” and NO, I DON’T FEEL THAT WAY, I just interpret this differently from you. It’s unintentionally dismissive and condescending.
