lokifan: black Converse against a black background (Snaco)

This week the role of Saturday recs post will be played by my Snape/Draco recs this month for [profile] crack_broom.

HP art recs

Snaco pic by [livejournal.com profile] scarletscarlet, aka ships_harry. Severus/Draco, R.

The art style is very cool and interesting, and it quietly says so much about their relationship: Draco flopped over, floating in subspace with those gorgeous cane marks on his back and thighs, and Severus sitting on the bed smoking, his back almost tense and his jaw jutting. I could look at this for hours.

Assuaging Fears and Lust by [livejournal.com profile] ariadneelda. Severus/Draco, NC-17.

It’s incredibly atmospheric - I defy you to look away - as well as sexy. I love the use of colour - this is a creepy, fantastically non-handsome Snape in greens and blues, swathed in black, while a naked Draco, touched with pink, cries out for him. The tension in Draco’s body, the way he’s clutching the sheets, Snape’s total focus... super-hot.

A New Acquirement by xaphania. Severus/Draco, R.

Their expressions and body language say so much. I love Severus’ intent, pleased expression, his focus and hand on Draco’s chest, his arm round Draco both supporting him and forcing him to stay close. (Whether the new acquirement is Draco’s new jewellery or Draco himself is pleasurably open to question.) Draco’s wince (pleasure? pain?) and clenched arms and their gorgeous half-dressed bodies... it’s sexy, but also intriguing in its different possibilities.

HP fic recs

Indebted by [livejournal.com profile] arsenicjade. Severus/Draco, ~24 000 words, R. Summary: Severus takes his debts very seriously.

One of [personal profile] arsenicjade’s talents - beyond writing excellent hurt/comfort, which this is - is giving us both a sense of the world of the relationship she’s writing about and its importance, and a sense of the wider world in which it’s going on. Here there is war, and aftermath, and different relationships, and various people living their own difficult lives, and all the past that’s following Severus around. And there’s also Severus-and-Draco, and the development of their relationship, and how they are anchors to each other. And excellent dialogue.

Some Most Exquisite Jewellery by [livejournal.com profile] alisanne. Severus/Draco, ~3000 words, NC-17. Summary: Just because Severus has vowed to help Draco in his task doesn't mean he can't get something out of it.

Severus here is nicely creepy: he’s not the dark!Snape, driven by lust, you sometimes see in fic, but his motives aren’t pure either. Draco needs his protection - this is HBP fic - and Severus takes the opportunity for a bit of manipulation. Draco, sullen and scared and arrogant and then overcome, is pitch-perfect.

A Peace That Was Torn From The Morning by [livejournal.com profile] ishafel. Severus/Draco, ~13 000 words, NC-17. Summary: Sometimes doing the right thing is as simple as doing the only thing you can do.

In some ways this is a weird rec: it’s for a story that’s part of a wider series (the Winter Prince series), it’s for a fic in which the Snape/Draco relationship is vital but not overwhelmingly so, and it’s incredibly dark. But it is marvellous. As ever, with [personal profile] ishafel, the prose sucks you in and is gorgeous enough to make the fic worth reading in itself. It’s a very Draco-centric fic, and his characterisation is beautifully done: he’s rather broken, but able to do terribly painful things because of it, and both his youth and his war experience come across heartbreakingly. Severus is very much himself here: used to keeping secrets, doing what he has to do, and pained by Draco’s pain but making it happen nonetheless because it’s necessary to win the war.

Draco’s sleeping with Harry for the war effort - because this is a broken, half-mad Harry, and he needs to be kept on the rails long enough to kill Voldemort. And although Draco spends far more time in bed with Harry than Severus throughout the fic, the Snape/Draco relationship is central. The fic shows their similarities but more of their differences come through, which is something I very much appreciate. And although their relationship doesn’t turn romantic/sexual until very late, the moment Draco tells Snape “I’m choosing to trust you”, despite betrayal, hits me right in the heart.

(spoilers for earlier Winter Prince stories:what you need to know - although I strongly recommend reading the earlier fics! Draco became a spy after he left Hogwarts, on the condition that Dumbledore protect Lucius in Azkaban. The good guys captured him, as a result of Draco trying to save Severus when he was caught as a spy by Voldemort, and he told them his password; they weren’t interested. Draco was kept in a cage, raped and beaten and fed drugs by Harry, Seamus, and other schoolmates. Dean Thomas participated initially, but also tried to temper them. Eventually he was found by Charlie Weasley and rescued. The Order Obliviated him, and Severus lied: told him he’d been captured by Death Eaters, been a hero under interrogation, and eventually rescued by Harry Potter. The memories were expected to come back, but not as quickly as they did: Draco was assigned a team and went out on a minor mission for the Order with Ginny, Dean, and Harry. Afterwards, drunk, Harry kissed him; that night Draco had nightmares and remembered. He almost killed Harry, but didn’t, and Severus looked after him for all night, though he also asked, “did you think you were the only man in the world ever to be raped?” That morning, they talked, and Severus told him that Draco could do as he chose this time. Draco agreed to let Harry do what he wanted with him, to help make sure Harry fulfilled the prophecy.)

Reclamation by [livejournal.com profile] arsenicjade. Severus/Draco, ~1400 words, NC-17; corsetry-style crossdressing.

Draco’s going to change Severus’ mind about Valentine’s Day. Incredibly hot and unabashedly romantic without being fluffy; the romance comes from how well they know each other and what they’ll do for each other. There are so many fun, IC, sexy details crammed into this titchy fic.

Thursday Night by [livejournal.com profile] gypsyflame. Severus/Draco, ~19 000 words, NC-17; spanking, D/s, bondage. Summary: When Amycus Carrow threatens him, Draco turns to Snape for protection. That choice leads him down a path he’d never thought he’d travel.

Everyone should read this because Draco combines vulnerability and need for protection with the belief that surely Snape will want him, and Snape combines protection of Draco with a ruthless survival instinct, and it’s all wrapped up in kink done right and slow falling in love.

The Puppet Master by [livejournal.com profile] ravenna_c_tan. Severus/Draco, ~8600 words, NC-17; prison rape off-camera. Summary: After the war, Snape, Draco, and Lucius are all in Azkaban awaiting either acquittal or exoneration. Now that the Dark Lord is gone, there is much to be said between these three men... but Snape won't be the first to speak, will he?

There is a brilliant twist! Which unfortunately makes the fic a little difficult to rec, since it’s one of those twists that changes your POV and everyone’s characterisation in retrospect. But I can say this is marvellous first-person Snape, acerbic and clever without being always in control. His little scenes with Harry, who is trying to secure their release from Azkaban, and the scene in which Snape relieves Draco of his virginity, and the touch of scheming, protective Narcissa... so many fantastic little moments and clever lines. Also, twist.

First Blood by switchknife. Severus/Draco, R, ~300 words. Summary: Snape tends to his charges.

This is a titchy ficlet but it contains so much - a perfect, killer last line, Draco’s dazed POV after his first night as a Death Eater, Severus inpenetrable to Draco but his actions saying so much, and absolutely gorgeous language.

His mouth still tingles with the taste of Death--sharp and green, like grass--Death tastes alive, a startling paradox, and as Snape hushes him and slides Draco's arms out of his sleeves, Draco manages to lean up and catch Snape's mouth--and yes, Snape tastes like Death too.

Nine and Sixty Ways by [livejournal.com profile] goseaward. Severus/Draco, nearly R, ~7100 words. Summary: There is always more than one possibility. Or, what could have happened after the end of Half-Blood Prince.

This is unique and fantastic: sixty-nine ways it could have gone between Draco and Snape after HBP. There’s very little dialogue, and yet it never feels tell-not-showy, only sparse and brilliant. There are loads of fantastic lines. And so many different scenarios are suggested, different emotions evoked, different decisions made by both Snape and Draco. Which is why I’ve chosen it as my last rec of the month; the fic feels almost like a Snaco manifesto, showing as it does all the different possibilites for their relationship - not all positive by any means. There are betrayals and abandonments and true loves, and all of them feel possible.
