lokifan: black Converse against a black background (Kelly: misfits)

I love this episode! It gives me so much joy. It’s so much fun, even with the death and the creepy and the fact that Simon is kind of having a mental breakdown in the background throughout.

CREEPY EVANGELIST LADY IS CREEPY. I like the very clear sexism of the whole POV, and the contempt that’s such an integral part of it -- Alisha and Kelly in particular are very nasty to their unSaved compatriots.

I love the hero shot of Nathan, Kelly and Simon. I love that it’s literally music that defends the Youf from anti-rock-and-roll forces. I love the different music choices. JUST DANCE, IT’S GONNA BE OKAY.

I love Nathan’s “I’m not much good at fighting, I never have been” and that Kelly was so ready to go out and fight them all to rescue Curtis. (And I like that we also see how much less effectual Virtue makes women: when brainwashed!Kelly finds Nathan holding a ‘gun’ on someone, she runs and screams for help. A respectable strategy, but rather less efficient than her usual bash-him-until-he-gives-in style.) I love Nathan’s attempt to rescue Kelly, and the pain in his voice when he says “I never should have left you” and his incredibly inept attempt to bring her back and explain how much he likes her.

My favourite part is Nathan’s big speech. It’s just genius. So utterly utterly banal and so perfect -- being a drunken screwup “until my late twenties, maybe even my early thirties”. That is such a great summing-up of the general expectation for British youth. I have a real thing for this kind of story -- dramatic fantasy/sci-fi fights for the right to be stupid and young and drunk, kids fighting against parents who like them grey and obedient. “This is every parent’s wet dream... no one else will do shit” is a slightly older version of my favourite bits in the Demon Headmaster series. The Misfits will fight and die for our right to party!

I love the ending. Oh, Kelly’s shrill “he’s not allowed to die” makes my heart hurt. I love her funeral gear: short and tight and clearly just what she had that was black. I love Curtis and Alisha ‘holding hands’ through the glass. Simon’s CD is so very thoughtful, and Kelly’s combination of crying and smiling is just. Painfully perfect. And then Nathan waking up -- YOU BURIED ME ALIVE, YOU DICKS! -- and the long shot of him just lying there listening to his ipod. I hope it has a long battery life.
