OMG you guys. I just got in from Miss Godfrey's Eurovision party, so I am kinda drunk, and high from singing Krista Siegfrids' "Marry Me" (Finland 2013 - the awesomely Ke$ha-esque, tragically unfeminist, controversial-due-to-lesbian-kiss-at-the-end) over and over. We also sang like, every single contender for national anthem we have, every time the UK got points - God Save The Queen, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, and obviously Football's Coming Home. I was kind of sad France came last, I really liked them and their song about wanting a moustache, although I voted for Italy (shiny gladitorial Gaga!) and Austria.

AUSTRIA.

OMG YOU GUYS. Miss Godfrey didn't rate the song at all, but I definitely liked it. Besides, Eurovision is like, 80% about not-music for me. And I am THRILLED THRILLED THRILLED that she won. She was so adorable when they got the points and looked so shocked they'd won and I loved how she kind of started all sweet about peace and freedom and then finished with "we are unstoppable!" and thrusting her trophy in the air. FUCK YEAH.

I am only more charmed by how much this was likely a protest vote against Russia :) Which, WOW. There were plenty of rainbow flags around the audience, in an attempt to get past the TV censors, and obviously Russia has compounded its civil liberties terribleness with its invasion of Ukraine, but I was not expecting THAT level of booing from the audience!!

I have some thoughts on the other entries (We Are Slavic was FANTASTICALLY TERRIBLE, the Hungary song was intensely inappropriate for Eurovision and I'm thrilled it didn't win) and the 12 Points Song (BEST. THING.) and how great it is to be the UK with our BBC, because being basically the last ad-free channel showing Eurovision means you get to see loads of hilariously random little nuggets. UK entry wasn't bad - I thought we deserved our 40-odd points but also our position in the bottom half. Idk, I am always happy to just go with a UK entry, after the Nul Points debacle and the awful flight-attendants thing and the creepy mid-thirties rapper doing "Teenage Life" with some nubile schoolgirls.

Anyway. AUSTRIAAAAAA

I quite like the UK's entry this year - she had a great voice. As always, the politics of voting is very interesting. And I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of the countries that people tended to deride for their views vote for Austria any fucking way. Go people!

And over here on the other side of the North Sea TV is also state sponsored and ad free - and Eurovision runs on one of those channels. DR, our BBC, was the hosting company after all :) So you're not the only ones to get all the fun stuff. (I loved the silly little fact nuggets so much.)
