Pretty Little Liars 611

SPOILERS guys.
Fucking, fucking hell. Narratively I absolutely see why they did it -- a new mystery, it takes Charlotte out of contention in “who is the new threat?”, and the dead blonde girl who is investigated by her female friends/sisters/enemies rather than male detectives is central to PLL and its narrative style and mission. But fucking hell. My feelings about the Charlotte reveal were ambiguous to say the least - there’s a lot I adore about it, but making a trans woman the central villain/victim, and a villain who is all about deceit? DODGY. But I liked how the programme did it, and was hoping that as the cultural context moved forward the dodgy would ease off -- because it’s the pattern that’s the problem. But killing her off immediately?!
I just. Argh.
And they’ve reverted to form in another arena too -- oh look, a SINISTER DISABLED PERSON who is perhaps LYING ABOUT HER DISABILITY. Argh.
I just. I love this programme and catching up now I have wifi is a very nice thing to be able to do this weekend, when I’m not feeling very well. But nooooooooo. Reveal her as trans and THE NEXT EPISODE kill her off? Give us no opportunity to see her actively redeemed and complex and not just a sympathetic villain? (Compare and contrast with Mona.) Give us no more time with an actress who rocked the reveal? Bring out your queers, bring out your fucking queers.
I tend to get annoyed when TV constantly brings back its characters from the dead. But I’m hoping Charlotte, given her melding and mixing of identities with both Alison and Mona, will follow their lead. Pretty Little Liars kills off a lot of people, but its dead teenage girls are very rarely left to stay dead -- only Bethany and Maya so far, and Bethany was required to fill Alison’s grave.
Given the open-casket funeral I’m sure she is dead. But PLL’s done more ludicrous stuff before, and like. It is, to say the least, DEEPLY UNFORTUNATE to have the only young women be left in their graves be so marginalised -- very mentally ill, bisexual, black, trans, or some combination.
I think Marlene King gets a lot of undeserved shit, but even so, my feelings right now...

And I was excited for Charlotte’s storyline :((((
And also. Poor poor Alison.
