Favourite Christmas music

Speaking of favourite Christmas music - I’ve put some faves below the cut, and I’d be curious about yours! My housemate K loves Christmas pop like Mariah Carey and Wham! But I tend to go for the earnest and slightly weird, or the comedy stuff.
It’s so beautiful and numinous, I’ve loved it for years. But it came up on my Christmas playlist when I was walking home in the dark towards the end of 2020, when we’d just had the news about the Covid vaccine. Hope had appeared in the dark and I cried buckets listening to this one.
It's the season of grace coming out of the void
Where a man is saved by a voice in the distance
It's the season of possible miracle cures
Where hope is currency
Speaking of songs that got a lot more emotional after covid. I’ve long been fond of this one too, it’s sweet and acknowledges the vulnerability of dark winter and my mum and middle sister love Meet Me In St Louis. But oh man. In 2021, my annual Hallowe’en trip with friends happened again, and it was late that year, in mid-November. So we went to a Christmas lights thing that was happening and they played this song, while I was back with friends I hadn’t seen in two years. Tears again!
Someday soon we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now
This is how I feel about Christmas :D The discomfort around capitalism and certain forms of Christianity but still really liking Christmas.
(Dawkins vs Tutu has aged badly, but still.)
I'm looking forward to Christmas
Though I'm not expecting a visit from Jesus
I'll be seeing my dad
My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum
They'll be drinking white wine in the sun
Link cos it won’t let me embed!
Anna and the Apocalypse is one of my favourite films, and this song is so funny and she’s just got bags and bags of charm. Festival cut is a bit weird vs the DVD version but you can definitely get the vibe :D
Lemme tell you, if
You're feeling frozen stiff
My fire's burning hot for you
Before you take a nap
Let me sit upon your lap
There's only one gift that I wanna unwrap
‘When you do your best for love it feels like Christmas’ is a line I thought of a lot during covid lockdowns.
A part of childhood we'll always remember
It is the summer of the soul in December
Yes, when you do your best for love it feels like Christmas
There’s a reason this is still my Christmas icon :D
And I do like that Christmas is religious in Muppets Christmas Carol: tis the season when the saints can employ us/to spread the news about peace and to keep love alive. I’m a cultural Christian myself but I find attempts to generalise/secularise Christmas into ‘the holidays’ often just have the effect of intensifying Christian hegemony; Christmas is supposed to be secular and the default when it’s neither of those things, and calling it a ‘holiday tree’ doesn’t help the situation. So I think embracing that element in a film like this is much better (as well as making the adaptation faithful and the overall worldview of it make sense). And it’s just a lovely, sweet song.
There’s magic in the air this evening
Magic in the air
The world is at her best, you know
When people love and care
The promise of excitement is one the night will keep
After all, there's only one more sleep 'til Christmas
What about you guys? What are your faves?
