Hadestown

I saw Hadestown at the weekend - even better than the last time! I saw it in 2018 and was like ‘hmm, I see why people like it but it didn’t set my world on fire’. This time I enjoyed it way more, though I find its politics good but depressing.

A couple of my flatmate [profile] sodsta’s American cousins were in town this week, and yesterday they took us to see Hamilton! Which was really lovely of them - they were good seats too, in the stalls. I was a bit like “...but you said you saw Hamilton in Chicago? We’re theatre people, there are so many great musicals we could recommend!” but I’m glad it worked for them, haha, cos it was great. And it was my third time seeing it on-stage, so clearly it stands up to repeat viewing!

Medea

I love reading other people’s reviews/reactions, so I’m going to try writing them more often. I’ll need to work up to books, but I can do theatre :) I saw Medea a little while ago at Soho Place, and it was brilliant. Stylistically, the play felt very similar to how it would’ve been at the time; it was performed in the round, a la ampitheatre, with a bare minimum of props. The declamatory style was, naturally, a radical contrast to anything I’ve seen on stage recently.

I went in knowing nothing more than ‘Medea kills her children as vengeance on her husband’. cut for details )

Waitress

Celebrating my birthday by trying to actually write about (or even mention) some of the theatre I see.

29 is a weird birthday - I keep thinking of ways to celebrate 30! - but it’s been a nice day. And on Monday I did fun stuff, and on Saturday I’m having a joint party with a BFF whose birthday is tomorrow. Yay :D

So yeah, Waitress just arrived in London and I got preview tickets for a great rate from a colleague who gets group rates, so I went last week, with @januarium and @mokatiki. I hadn’t even known it was a film, I knew nothing about it besides that the soundtrack in particular had got rave reviews.

The songs are indeed great! YAY. Sara Bareilles is very hit-or-miss for me as a singer-songwriter, although I really love the songs I like, and I’m really glad these worked for me.

The musical itself was fun, despite some messy bits. Things I liked & things I didn’t )

So I can see it going either way for people, but I enjoyed it a lot.

I don’t know if this is people’s assumptions or I’m just watching the “wrong” musicals but every time someone says they find musicals too happy and pat, I’m like... Rent? Wicked? Les Mis? Hamilton? Sweeney Todd? Into The Woods? I mean it’s way easier for me to think of ones where people die and things don’t really get fixed.

1. Apparently my fic Aftershocks was one of the most popular Harry/Draco fics on AO3 in 2016! At least as far as drarry-specific-recs can tell, from hits. What??? It’s like 2k of after-sex fingering. But then I guess that would back up my theory that a lot of the most successful fic (in terms of attention/love) combines a big pairing with an offbeat kink.

2. I have a problem with my left eye which will probably not get better, but is far from a disaster. (I can’t read with the left eye alone, but my peripheral vision is fine and my right eye compensates, so I barely notice having a floater in the left eye.) Mostly I notice when I do my eye make-up. Right now I’m relieved that the attempt at making it better - two INJECTIONS INTO MY EYE, NEEDLE IN MY ACTUAL EYE OH MY GOD - is probably over.

3. I signed up for [community profile] hd_erised. I was in at nine minutes and the very last sign-up. Now the waiting for my assignment begins! I wouldn’t be surprised if this was my last fic for that fest - although not my last HP fic! - so. Yeah. I’m pleased I got in, although we’ll see how I feel once I get my match!

4. Friday I went to see ‘Queers’ with [personal profile] kabal42, [profile] magicatmungos, and [personal profile] mokatiki. It was gorgeous - four monologues from queer men (I think three gay, one trans and straight) going forward in time. They were funny, heartbreaking, clever, and also really wonderfully expressed some of the ambiguity within the community about respectability, and legality, and the feeling of loss that comes with not being an “outlaw” as you become accepted. That’s not something I see talked about much, but it’s a very real tension. Also different varieties of happy endings. <3

5. I’m sorry I’m SO TERRIBLE at comment replies right now. It’s 100000% not you, it’s me.
