Merlin 310: Queen of Hearts

OKAY I KNOW MANY OF YOU WILL DISAGREE BUT I THOUGHT THE WEDDING DREAM SEQUENCE WAS CUTE. Merlin beaming away! The love theme playing! Gwen looking all anxious and Arthur’s smile giving her courage!
EXTREMELY saccarhine. But I find Merlin and Gwen’s friendship so charming, and Arthur and Gwen so cute when I can imagine they *worked* to get to this stage, and Merlin’s friendship with Arthur so fun that I am just aglow with 0T3 love.
Morgana’s nightmare is blatantly scary because WHERE IS SHE?! POLYAMOURY, THOU FOUL BETRAYER.
Once again massive inconsistency on where Gwen sleeps...
Oh, this makes me so sad. :( Merlin’s focus has always been the boys but I loved that the importance of female-female friendships has generally been clear: Morgana and Gwen’s friendship, and how Morgana relies on Morgause later. Morgana’s rivalry and most important friendship being both with women is cool. But I really hate to see Morgana start thinking of it as a straight-up competition: who gets to be the Queen of Camelot?
Particularly since although I don’t think Gwen is an anti-feminist character at all, and you know, loving a dude is better than killing him, I do think it sucks to have the ambitious woman who wants the throne for herself played as the villainous counterpart to a kind woman who’d never want advancement for its own sake, and will never claim the authority of monarchy from a man. I feel like an Arthurian retelling nowadays always has to grapple with Morgan le Fay and feminism, and Merlin is trying to sidestep it completely.
Which is sort of less enraging with engaging with those issues in a failtastic way? But not much. I don’t know - this is a liveblog not meta, so this is basically a heap of undigested thoughts.
Moar Morgana in red plz. *shallow*
*wails* OMG MORGANA. I am going to have to fanwank that Morgana isn’t using Gwen’s name because she’s trying to think of her as only “my serving girl” instead of her friend. Otherwise I will die of stupid rushed characterisation and sunken ship.
I always LOL at Merlin serving Uther, Arthur and Morgana at meals. Are there NO OTHER servants in the castle?!
Odin?! ODIN is testing your northern borders? AHAHAHA. This is what’s awesome about this programme. It tears at my heart and the next second I’m dead of the crack.
Also Merlin grinning at Arthur knocking over his glass because of Gwen’s hotness is awesome. I just really love Merlin as this supportive best friend who is SO AMUSED by Arthur’s lack of suave. ♥
Links to fic with Morgana (and maybe Merlin) as sincere matchmakers would be appreciated.
ALSO OMG ARTHUR SHUT UP ABOUT HAVING “SUCH FEELINGS” FOR HER. YOU BARELY SPEAK TO HER.
Okay, see the scene with Merlin & Gwen is how I like seeing Arthur/Gwen done. He can be spoilt! But he likes her, and she likes him. See how non-overblown and cute that was?? Why can’t it all be like that?!
Sorry, watching all this in a few days is making me full of OPINIONS.
MERLIN IS DUMBSTRUCK BY HOW LOVELY GWEN LOOKS. ARTHUR IS CHECKING HIMSELF OUT IN THE PLATES. MERLIN IS BRINGING GWEN. IT IS ALL SO CUTE AND OT3.
Aww. Gwen & Arthur teasing each other and being comfortable instead of ~sighing. I am so happy.
OMG CAUGHT!
I actually really love that Arthur was all YOU CAN’T FORBID IT! and then got smacked down. This is why it matters that she’s a servant, Arthur. Because Uther can do these things.
Also, it pains me that Arthur blames Merlin, but makes sense. I really loved the little moment of Arthur/Merlin tension amidst the Gwen!angst: you couldn’t keep a secret if your life depended on it indeed.
Oh, Arthur. In earlier seasons Morgana was the one who openly defied Uther, even when he chained her up or whatever, where Arthur often disagreed with him but always supported him and the rule of law. It’s a big thing for him to choose Gwen over Camelot. I suspect a lot of the fandom is FULL OF OUTRAGE, and I’m not sure how I feel about it in light of the general lack of development of Arthur/Gwen... but yeah, big thing.
Angel Coulby really sells the angst, as ever. OMG TRIAL SCENE. Uther was really scary doing straight-up villainy. I love that Gaius was kind of tricked into supporting the witchcraft theory and actually openly says that Uther’s wrong - that’s a big moment for him, as well. Uther being all *concerned dad* was awesome.
I really wish Gwen had more dialogue - her impending death should be more about her than Arthur! But Coulby rocks it anyway. The Arthur/Gwen kiss edged into sublime over ridiculous for me, cos the actors really sold it.
Reckless as ever, Merlin.
OMG AHAHAHA OLD MAN VOICE.
ARTHUR: Have we met before?
MERLIN: ...No.
ARTHUR: The eyes... I have definitely seen you before. Not sure where.
Merlin: You ho. How many people have you had - I mean, no, you’ve never seen me before in your life.
The combination of hilarious Old Man Voice yelling at Arthur, and the moment where Merlin gets to tell Uther what he is, is a microcosm of all the cracktastic fail and Awesome of Merlin.
Also, Gaius’ eyerolls pwns my soul.
OMG DISASTER!
SWALLOW IT, MERLIN, YOU FOOL! JUST SWALLOW IT! /arthurmoment
YAY GWEN. You are quite right. Arthur’s duty is to replace Uther and NOT BE A DICK. Sorry kids.
Hmm. I think episodes focused on Arthur/Gwen, as a general rule, I find enjoyable and fun; it’s the episodes in-between lacking anything but ~sighs to build their relationship that’s the problem. But whatevs, cos next episode has LOADSA SWORDFIGHTS!
