End-of-year life meme
Jan. 4th, 2018 07:38 amThis is probably not interesting to anyone but me! But I like reading other people’s, and I’d like to be able to compare these in years to come, so…
I’m very behind on email/messages/comment replies, but that should be fixed soon!
1. What did you do in 2017 that you'd never done before?
Initiate a Defining The Relationship talk.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
See this post.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.
5. What countries did you visit?
Zero! Boo poverty.
6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?
Financial security. A sense of making serious progress.
7. What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The 19th of December, when I saw Hamilton in previews.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finishing the novella-sized fic, i.e. by far my longest piece of fiction yet is a strong contender, but I think it’s probably my BFF Ms Godfrey’s hen do. I contributed a significant amount to the planning by coming up with an itinerary for our weekend and booking a restaurant, and then got a horrible cold - the kind that feels like flu. I actually texted to say I couldn’t come - it was a weekend away - and then when I dropped by to give her a present, because she lives twelve minutes from me, she’d clearly been in tears. So I made myself go, and I was snotty and disgusting and needed a nap on Saturday afternoon, but I made it through!!! And stayed up late with her on Saturday. SO glad I did.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not keeping enough of a handle on my finances. Lateness with the big fic.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
My chronic eye problem was confirmed to be such. I suffered a stinking cold in November, which wouldn’t have made much of an impression except for the hen do almost-derailment and coming when I was trying to write 2k of fic a day.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Theatre tickets. (Hamilton, Cursed Child, Matilda, supporting a cool pub theatre etc.)
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My BFF
januarium, who has been an absolute hero in taking care of her mother after a stroke - something that would be incredibly hard work, expensive and difficult and all the time, without her mother being… well, let me put it this way, sometimes
januarium talks about her most recent shenanigans and Jan’s husband A and I exchange looks.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Theresa May, Boris Johnson’s, and various other Tories - I mean, these people got the UK investigated by the UN for human rights abuses over their treatment of disabled people so I shouldn’t be shocked, but their incompetence and arrogance over Brexit has been truly something to behold and their treatment of the poor, disabled, or other marginalised is hideous. May’s deal with the DUP was not only a hideous waste of money for self-protection, it risked the Good Friday Agreement. Then there’s the US Republicans, of course - both voters (the majority of white voters for Roy Moore) and Congressional - if in 2015 I’d read a story where they were so utterly corrupt, bigoted, and cowardly in their failure to hold people to the standards they say they uphold, I’d have said ‘these people revolt me but steady on.’ Deeply disappointing.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Fancy M&S salads, surviving winter, and theatre tickets.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Seeing Hamilton and all the joys of Hallowe’en.
16. What song will always remind you of 2017?
Toss-up between Bodak Yellow and For Forever, in its musical and FFXV associations for me.
17. Compared to this time last year,
i. Happier or sadder?
Sadder, I think, but 2017 as a whole was significantly happier than 2016 because I spent the whole time living in London, being near friends and seeing visitors and generally enjoying life overall, whereas 2016 had some of that, and some real enjoyment of Italy, and some feeling depressed and alone.
ii. richer or poorer?
Poorer. Oh dear.
iii. thinner or fatter?
A bit fatter, I think? Certainly I put on weight over Christmas.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Working on the next teaching qualification.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Eating my feelings.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
See this post.
21. Did you fall in love in 2017?
Ummmmmmm. Yes?
22. How many one night stands?
Ummm. One, depending on the definition.
23. What was the best book you read?
The History of the World in Bite-Sized Chunks by Emma Marriott. I learnt a lot of interesting stuff, and I think I’ll peek back at it. It helps me get some context, is the main thing, for like - Phoenicians and Carthage, and the Umayyad Caliphate, things I see referenced but don't have a strong sense of.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
A bunch of famous men.
25. What was your favourite TV programme?
This hasn’t changed from my 2016 answer: it’s gotta be Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The writing and acting and performing is uniformly excellent, many of the songs are on my phone, the music videos are hysterical and amazing. And it says so many interesting, deeply-relevant-to-my-life things about young women today, about feminism and mental illness and love and identity, and gave me the first bi TV character I’ve ever had who is happy and proud to claim that label.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
See this post.
27. What did you want and get?
Moving to a much nicer place. Bringing two RL BFFs, Violet and the Dark Lady, to my fandom Hallowe’en weekend away - I’ve been telling them for years that they’d have a blast and they should come and they did and I WAS RIGHT.
28. What did you want and not get?
A yes on the couple of things I submitted for publication.
29. What was your favourite film of this year?
See this post.
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 27, and I saw an all-women production of The Taming of the Shrew and went to a club with a massive ballpit.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Prison sentences following social opprobrium for outed abusers.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?
Novelty prints make everything better.
33. What kept you sane?
WhatsApping my friends at crucial moments.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
God. Did I fancy any of them? Chris Hemsworth and Rebecca Bloom.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Feminism and other social justice concerns, prison reform, environmental damage.
36. Whom did you miss?
wickedblonde,
marbletables and my cousin Terrible’s girlfriend P win for Person I Wished Was There At Specific Moments, as well as Being Fabulous.
37. Who was the best new person you met?
I haven’t spent enough time with her, but my mate
son_of_darkness/
bestchocobro’s new girlfriend seems pretty great.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017:
Um, sorry, I am way too English for this one.
39. BONUS QUESTION: What were your best meals of the year?
The Indian I had after getting back from family Christmas was A+.
kabal42 made this fantastic pasta dish for our shmancy Hallowe’en dinner.
40. Other new question: What are you looking forward to in 2018?
Starting a new qualification, Nine Worlds, and the joys of London life with my friends.
I’m very behind on email/messages/comment replies, but that should be fixed soon!
